Chapter
seventy-six:
Christy jumped out of the rental car, and closed the door behind her.
Isaac met her in front of the car and draped an arm around her shoulders,
pressing the alarm button on the keys as he did so.
The sound of the
alarm setting echoed through the still night air. The evening had been
beautiful, and after a luxurious dinner, they drove to the ocean and walked
hand in hand in the sand.
He pulled her
body closer to his and gently placed a kiss on her forehead.
Christy smiled
to herself and wrapped her arms around the body of her fiancé. It still felt
odd calling him that. She loved him undeniably, but being engaged to him felt
like some beautiful fairy-tale, which was too good to be true.
Christy yawned
tiredly as he unlocked the door to the front of the house.
“Tired?” Isaac
questioned
“Yeah, I’m
exhausted.”
“Me too,” He
smirked. “That second time this afternoon wore me out too.”
Christy laughed.
“I don’t doubt that.” She stepped inside and removed her shoes.
“Come on, want me to make you a cup of coffee?” He asked, kicking
off his sneakers.
“Hmm…
maybe decaf.” She
laughed.
She followed him
into the kitchen, where Jenna and Becky were sitting at the table together in
their pajamas, looking through a magazine. Between them, there was a tub of ice
cream and a shared spoon.
Christy sat down
next to Jen at the table, looking over at the magazine. “Is that mine?”
“Yeah, I
borrowed it. We’re just catching up on this month’s riveting issue of Cosmo.”
“Ahh… that’s a good issue.” Christy picked up an extra spoon that
was sitting on the table and helped herself to a
spoonful of ice cream, then reached for the magazine and another scoop.
Isaac set a mug
of instant coffee next to her.
“Here, baby.”
She held up the spoonful of ice cream.
He smiled and
ate it. “Thanks. I think I’m going to head to off to bed though.”
Christy returned
the smile knowingly. “I’ll follow in a minute, okay? Just let me drink my
coffee.”
“Of
course.” He leaned
forward and kissed her lips.
“Awww… get a room!” Jenna groaned. “Nobody needs any of that
mushy stuff right now!”
Isaac laughed
and shrugged.
“We have a room,
and we will be using it, if you’re wondering.” Christy smiled at her fiancé.
“Alright, I’ll
see you upstairs.” He walked from the room.
When he was out
of earshot, Christy turned back to her friends. “What’s wrong? Who’s upset?”
“No
one. I’m fine. We’re
fine.” Jenna said quickly.
“Come on. Ice cream? Cosmo? Something is up.”
Christy said blankly.
“Jenna misses
Luke. She’s mad at him.” Becky told.
“No I don’t.”
Jenna reached for the ice cream. “I’m not mad. I’m fine.”
“Then why did
you take down all of your photos of him?” Becky questioned.
“Because
they didn’t fit the décor.” Jenna shot back. “I’m going to bed.” She pushed herself up from
the table and left the room.
Christy and
Becky exchanged glances.
Finally Becky
sighed. “I’ll clean up, go on to bed.”
