Chapter
sixty-six:
Jenna stepped
out into the hall at the same time as Isaac, Christy, Taylor, Zac and Becky
did.
“What the fuck
was that?” Jenna asked.
Christy held
onto Isaac’s arm tightly. “Someone is downstairs!”
“Oh
my god!” Becky
gasped.
“Girls, come
here.” Zac pushed open the bathroom door and ushered all three girls inside.
“Wait here, and lock the door. Don’t open it unless it’s one of us, okay? We’ll
go check it out.”
The girls
exchanged glances, and Zac pulled the door closed.
Becky quickly
locked it before she turned around to face Christy and Jenna. “I’m scared.”
“It’s probably
nothing.” Jenna rolled her eyes, lifting herself up onto the vanity. “Just some
kids breaking windows.”
“No, it’s more
than that. I felt someone downstairs. I knew it.” Christy sat down on the edge
of the tub, hugging her arms around herself. “It was a horrible feeling. Like
we were all in danger, you know?”
“Oh come on,
that’s just from watching too many scary movies.” Jenna said.
“No, it’s not.
It’s more than that.” Christy said. “I know it is. I’m right; I’m always right
when I get these feelings.”
Suddenly, the
small window in the bathroom exploded, sending shards of class scattering
across the small bathroom.
All three girls
screamed.
Becky unlocked
the door and the three girls ran as fast as they could down the hall, and
flying down the stairs.
They crashed
into
“Whoa! What
happened?” He demanded.
“The
window in the bathroom!
Someone outside broke it!” Christy explained.
“Oh
my god!” Jenna
gasped, looking away into the living room. She was looking past them to the
large empty wall between the two front windows of the house. The windows had
been shattered, with the glass splayed outward on the front lawn. Between the
two windows was scribbled “GIRLS: LEAVE OR DIE”.
“Is that… Is
that blood?” Becky asked, suddenly feeling sick.
“It… looks like
it.” Jenna squinted to see, leaning over the banister.
“I think I’m
going to throw up…” Becky turned away from the wall and hugged Christy tightly.
“Girls, come
into the kitchen. Okay? Isaac is calling the police.”
Becky and
Christy walked hand and hand ahead, eager to get to their boyfriends, but Jenna
lagged behind to examine the scene.
“Jen, honey,
come on.”
“They really
were in here… the glass is on the outside, which means the windows were broken
from the inside out.” She looked up at
“I know, Jen.
We’ll get this all taken care of… I promise… do you need a hug?”
She nodded and
collapsed against his chest.
He hugged her
tightly for a moment. “Everything is going to be okay. You won’t get hurt.” He
placed an arm around her waist and led her towards the kitchen.
