Chapter fifty
nine:
Jenna was curled up in a patio chair on Becky’s back deck, drinking from a can
of dr. pepper.
Luke and Zac were playing soccer in the back yard.
Becky sat down
after getting up to grab another soda. “What’s wrong?” Becky asked.
“Nothing.” Jen forced a smile. “Why?”
“Don’t five me
that shit, Jen. You’ve been avoiding Luke all day. What happened last night?”
“Nothing. Last night was perfect.” Jenna sighed
heavily, “It was this morning.”
“What happened?”
Becky moved her chair closer to Jenna’s.
“Well, we were
kissing, and… I don’t know. I was thinking about how we only have two days together,
and everything, so we started making out. Then all of a sudden he stops me.
Like he’s afraid to touch me because we’re only going to be together for two
days… I just don’t get it. Like any other man in the universe would be all over
that opportunity…”
“That sounds
reasonable… so why does it bother you so much? The fact that he turned you
down?”
“It’s not just
that… I mean we have two days. Intentionally starting a fight over a few kisses
is ridiculous. I mean, I have barely seen the guy in two years and we’re
fighting over nothing!”
”Maybe he just wants to make the most out of the time you have together… or
maybe he’s one of those guys who wants to wait until marriage?”
Jenna sighed. “I just wish he would loosen up a little, you know? He’s such a sweetie
and sometimes… I don’t know, sometimes it’s hard. I care about him so much, but
it’s not easy.”
“It’s okay. I’m
sure everything will work out fine… Maybe I can help. I’ll distract Zac and you
guys can talk a little.”
“No, I don’t
think that’ll help.” Jenna got up and passed through the double doors and into
the house.

Becky was
standing in the kitchen, pulling a loaf of bread out of the fridge when Zac
appeared behind her. He reached past her and grabbed two bottles of water,
tossing one across the kitchen to Luke.
”What are you doing?” Zac asked.
”Making lunch.” Becky smiled and grabbed the tub of
margarine.
“Need any help?”
”Umm, yeah, Zac.” Becky handed him some bologna. “That would be great.”
“Can I do
anything, Beck?” Luke spoke finally after chugging down an entire bottle of
water.
“Umm…
actually. There is
one thing. You can go upstairs and talk to Jen.”
Luke swallowed
and put down the empty bottle. “You heard about that, huh?”
Becky nodded.
“You have two days, Luke. And she’s crazy about you.”
“Okay. I’ll talk
to her… Thanks Beck.” He walked out of the kitchen, and out of sight.
“What did I
miss?” Zac asked, already chewing on a rolled up piece of bologna.
Becky smiled.
“Don’t worry. It’s nothing. Just be glad we don’t have the same problem.” She
stood up on her toes and kissed his cheek.
