Chapter fifty
four:
After posing for
a photo with Becky, he followed her into the large gymnasium, which was already
crowded full of other seniors, dancing and socializing.
Several people looked
up at them him in alarm, most likely recognizing him. He hoped they wouldn’t
come over, he didn’t want to interrupt Becky’s big
night.
“Becca? Are you going to introduce me to any of
your friends?”
“You know Jen,
that’s all that matters.” She said, walking backwards and pulling him along.
“What about the
rest of the people here?”
“They don’t
matter. I just want to be with you.” He smiled, and pulled her hand to bring
her closer.
“That’s sweet,
Becca.” He bent and kissed her.
She wrapped her
arms around his neck tightly. “Dance with me?”
“Of
course!” He grinned.
“I know you hate
to dance…”
“Yeah, but I’ll
grin and bear it if I get to hold you in my arms all night long.”
“Aww… Zaccy…”
He looped his
arms around her tiny waist and pulled her body against his, holding her
tightly, he rested his forehead against hers lightly, staring into her
beautiful blue eyes.
Becky giggled. “You
know, when you’re dancing, I think we’re supposed to move.”
“I know, but I’d
rather dance this way.”
“But technically
I don’t think we’re dancing.”
“That’s okay.”
“People are
going to look at us.” She laughed.
“So? Let them. I
haven’t seen my girlfriend in like six months, they’ll understand.”
Becky giggled. “You’re
right.”
He grinned and
pulled her even closer, pulling her body in close to his own.
“I’m so glad
that we get to spend this night together, Zaccy.” She breathed. “It wouldn’t be
the same without you.”
He gently kissed
her forehead. “I’m glad to be here. I want to make you happy…”
Becky tilted her
head up to look at him. “You’re the best boyfriend in the world.”
He shrugged. “Yeah,
I know.”
Becky giggled.

Luke twirled
Jenna away from his body in a flourish of skirt and in one quick movement; he
pulled her close to his body again.
Jenna tossed her
head back and laughed. “Where did you learn to dance like that?”
“I have six
sisters.” He shrugged. “When they get married, they make everyone take dance
lessons.”
“Ahh….” She laughed as he dipped her backward in a neat dip.
The song ended
and a new slower one came on.
Jenna smiled
widely. “Can we sit this one out? Maybe go for a walk?”
“Absolutely.” He smiled. He followed her off the dance
floor, gently placing one hand on the small of her back.
“Would you like
something to drink?” He offered as they passed a refreshment bar.
“No thank you.”
They made their
way out of the gym and Jenna took his hand, “Lets go this way.” She led him
through the hall and eventually, the crowds dissipated and they were alone.
“So where are we
going?” He asked at last, interlacing his fingers with hers.
“I don’t know… I
just want to be alone with you. I haven’t seen you in so long.”
He smiled. “I
know the feeling…”
They turned a
corner and Jen stopped walking. She wrapped her arms around his body, and rested
her cheek against his chest. “I missed you.” She said quietly.
He smiled to
himself and pulled her closer into his body, resting his cheek atop her head. “I
missed you too. Next time, we need to visit each other more often. Eight months
is too long.”
“I know.”
Jenna felt close
to tears. It was so hard to be with someone you cared about so much, knowing
that each time she saw him; she would have to see him leave.
“Jen, love, don’t
cry.”
“I know.” She
drew in a deep breath. “It’s just not easy knowing
that you’re going to leave again.”
He hugged her
closer. “I know, so let’s just enjoy the time we have okay? We’ll dance
together and have a wonderful prom together, and sooner or later, and we’ll
have the time of our lives, okay?”
Jenna nodded. “Okay.”
