Chapter two hundred and eight:
Christy was nervously sitting in a doctor’s office.
Isaac was seated close by, but she couldn’t help but feel nervous.
He had called around and found a walk in clinic, and they had gone
straight there without a moment of hesitation.
Christy wanted to know for sure, and so did Isaac. She had a gut
feeling, but she needed to be sure. She needed to hear it from a doctor.
She glanced around the room and finally at her husband.
Isaac was bent over his phone, his brow knitted in frustration.
“Honey? What is it?” She asked.
“Nothing, C.” He looked up with a smile. “
“Oh.” She nodded. “Okay.”
“Are you nervous?” He asked.
“Yeah. Definitely.”
She slipped of the table and perched herself on her knee. “I mean, this one
test is going to determine the rest of our lives…”
“I know.” He smiled, tucking his phone into the front pocket of
his shirt. “I’m excited, but I’m also a bit scared. You know?” His arm circled
her body, keeping her balanced on his knee.
Christy rested her head on his shoulder.
“Just think, when this is over, we can get back to our honeymoon
and we’ll be able to get back to
Christy smiled. “And maybe a nursery?”
They were interrupted by a doctor and a nurse coming back into the
room.
“Well, I’ve got some good news for you both.”
Christy returned to the examination table. “It was positive?”
“You’re definitely pregnant.” The doctor smiled.
“Congratulations.”
Isaac beamed happily and stood to kiss his new wife. She smiled,
unable to hide it. She reached for his hand and felt entirely more relaxed when
he squeezed back.
“If you’d like to just lie back, I can do an ultra sound and see
how far along you are, then we can give you some pamphlets and set you up with
your prenatal care.”
“Okay,” Christy laid back on the table, while Isaac moved to where
he wouldn’t be in the way, keeping Christy’s hand firmly in his.
The nurse folded Christy’s shirt up to expose her stomach, and
opened a bottle of gel. “This’ll be a bit cold.”
Christy nodded, but still flinched as the gel came into contact
with her skin.
The nurse flipped a switch on the machinery and pressed a couple of
buttons. After a few seconds, a blurry and static-filled picture came on the
screen. After moving the wand around a few times, the nurse stopped at a blurry
black spot on the otherwise white static. “There it is.”
“That black bean-shaped thing?” Isaac asked, squinting.
“Yes, that’s it.” The doctor pointed, looking up from the notes he
was scribbling in a file. “You’re about five weeks.”
Christy smiled, still feeling slightly awestruck. “We have a
baby.”
