Chapter two hundred and seven:
Jen sat nervously in the restaurant. Luke was finishing his
breakfast, and taking intermittent sips from his coffee mug.
“Can’t eat anymore?” He asked with a smile.
Jen shook her head no. “I don’t think I could eat another bite.”
Luke chuckled. “I know, I’m getting
pretty full myself.”
Jen forced a smile. Her skin felt hot, and sweat suddenly broke
out on her forehead.
“Will you excuse me for just a moment? I should use the washroom.”
“Of course.”
Jen slipped out of her seat and walked quickly toward the sign
which clearly labeled the direction of the bathroom.
She moved quickly down the hall and let herself into the women’s
washroom. She chose the stall furthest away from the door and locked herself
in. She leaned against the door and ran her hands through her hair.
She had reached her goal weight. She was finally starting to feel
good about her body again, but she couldn’t ignore the gnawing feeling in her
stomach.
After several moments, she washed her hands and face, retouched her make-up and
walked out of the bathroom. Luke met her in the hall.
“Everything okay, love?” He asked.
She nodded. “I just have a bit of a headache.”
“Yeah? Do you want to go back to my
place? I bet the Hanson’s house is full of noise, you know with kids and
boyfriends and friends…”
Jen smiled. “Yeah, pretty much.”
“Ok.” He put his arm around her. “I paid for our breakfast, so we’re
free to go.”
Jenna nodded and cleared her sore throat.
“I might even have some aspirin in my car-“ He
was interrupted by the phone ringing loudly from the front pocket of his jeans.
“Sorry, Just a second.” He
removed his arm from around her shoulders and stepped aside to answer his
phone.
Jen remained in place, closing her eyes tightly. She was dizzy.
She heard Luke snap his phone closed with a heavy sigh.
“Jen, we need to go to Zac’s. And I think there’s something you
need to tell me.”
“Ok…” Jen began in confusion.
He took her hand firmly and led the way to his jeep. He opened the door for her
and closed it sharply when she was inside.
Jen bit her lower lip in confusion. She fastened her seatbelt
while racking her brain, trying to figure out what Zac could have told Luke that
would upset him.
Luke got in the drivers seat and started the car before doing up
his seatbelt. “Start talking.” He instructed, backing out of the parking space.
“About what?” Jen asked,
“Zac says you’ve been getting threats.”
“Oh. That.” She looked down at her hands, which were folded neatly
in her lap.
“Yes, that! You didn’t think to tell me?”
“I didn’t want you to worry!”
“Jen! Of course I’m worried! You could
be in danger!”
“I’m not! We don’t even know if these are real threats! They haven’t
done anything in months!” She protested.
Luke sighed, shaking his head. He clamped his mouth shut to keep
himself from saying something stupid.
“Is Becky okay?” Jen asked.
“She’s fine.” He said quickly, turning down a side street. “She
found some kind of a website with pictures and personal information for you,
Becky and Christy.”
“What’s the address?”
Luke darted a glance at her.
“I want to see it!” She defended. “If I’m on it, I should be able
to see what’s on it!”
“Zac is on the phone with lawyers to have it shut down.
Jen crossed her arms over her chest. “I’m sorry. I should have
told you.” She admitted finally, although she only partially meant it.
