Chapter one
hundred and ninety-eight:
”Hey, taking a
break?”
Becky looked up from the basket of mints in slight alarm. She had found a table
and sat munching on mints in order to avoid more people and rest her tired
body.
Zac was standing over her.
“Yeah.” She smiled. “Sit with me, Zaccy.” She
moved her feet off one of the chairs for him to sit.
The entire wedding party had moved from the church to Isaac’s
parent’s backyard where there was room to spread out. A makeshift dance floor
had been set up near a small stage where as jazz band was playing. Everything looked beautiful and elegant, just
the way Christy had wanted.
“So?” He said.
“So…”
He smiled, fighting with his tie. “God, this thing is driving me
crazy! I can’t wait to get out of it!”
Becky leaned forward and adjusted his tie so it looked perfect
again. “There. How come you hate it so much? It looks great on you…”
“I don’t know… it’s too formal for me. I like jeans.”
Becky smiled. “Okay. Well, I can sympathize. My shoes are killing me.”
“Really? That sucks because I was going to ask
for a dance.”
Becky laughed. “I think I’m all danced out…”
“What? No way!” Zac cried. “You’ve danced
with everyone but me! You danced with my dad, and with Luke… you even danced
with
Becky giggled. “Okay, I have one dance left for you.”
“Great! Let’s go!” He pulled her to her feet.
She laughed. “Wait, my shoes!”
“No, leave them off.” He pulled her across the grass in her bare
feet and stopped in the middle of the dance floor.
He pulled her close and lifted her up, so that she was standing on
top of his feet.
Becky laughed. “Zac! You’re crazy! Let’s dance
normally…”
“But you said your feet hurt, so let me do all the work, okay?
Hold on!”
She tightened her arms around his neck and let him lead, but she
couldn’t hold back a parade of giggles.
“Am I a better dancer than
Becky smiled, “You’re a much best dancer!”
“Good, then I can do this.” He bent her backward in an awkward
dip.
She burst out laughing again.

He visually
scanned the dance floor and noticed Jen dancing with Luke. Even though the band
was playing a fast song, Luke had his arms around Jen and was making her laugh.
She looked so
happy for the first time in months, just seeing her laugh brought a smile to
“Ask her to
dance.”
“Jenna.”
“So? That
doesn’t mean you can’t dance with her at your brother’s wedding.”
“Yeah, it does,
Dad. There’s too much history there, you know?”
“So just because
you have a crush on her means you’re forbidden to dance with her?”
“Who says-“
“
“Alright.” Mr. Hanson laughed. “Just go. Humor your
old man.”
“But I’m
supposed to watch Christy’s dad and make sure-“
“I’ll take over.
Go.”
