Chapter one
hundred and eighty one:
Becky slid
across the back seat of the cab and took Zac’s hand as he helped her from the
cab and onto the sidewalk.
”Where are we going?” She asked, as he closed the door
behind them, and the cab pulled back onto the street.
“You’ll see.” He
smiled.
Becky giggled.
“You’re so cute.”
“I’m cute?” He
asked with a laugh. “Okay, I’ll remember that.”
“Good, you do
that.” She hugged his arm.
Zac laughed and
held open the door for her. “Here we are.”
Becky released
his arm and walked into the building. She glanced around for a few moments
until she realized precisely where she was. She laughed out loud. “A bowling alley?”
Zac shrugged,
his hands shoved deep into the front pockets of his jeans. “It was the only
place I could think of on such short notice.” He admitted, somewhat shyly. “It
might be fun.”
Becky smiled and
kissed his cheek softly. “This is great. I haven’t been bowling in ages!”
He smiled.
“Great! Let’s get our shoes?”
“Okay.” She
followed him to the shoe counter, and gave the man behind the counter her shoe
size and sat down on the bench to slip them on and lace them up.
Zac plopped a
few bills on the counter to pay for their shoe rental and their game and sat
down next to Becky. He changed shoes and stood up, testing the size by jumping
up and down.
Becky laughed.
“We’re on lane
six.”
“Great.” She
followed him to the lane and looked from side to side. The entire bowling alley
was practically empty, aside from a group of senior citizens at the far side of
the alley.
Becky looked
down at the pins and the bowling balls which had lined up next to their lane.
“Becca? Everything okay?” Zac asked, returning from the snack bar with
a glass of soda in each hand.
“Umm… Yeah.” She smiled, wiping her hands on her jeans. “Diet?”
“Diet
Pepsi. Is that okay?”
She nodded.
“Perfect.”
“Good. You’re up
first.”
Becky sat down
quickly. “That’s okay, you can go
first.”
“No,
no, ladies first.”
”That’s okay. You
go.”
Zac laughed and
sat next to her, passing her drink into her hand. “What is it?”
Becky smiled
slightly. “I’ve never played with ten
pins before.”
“It’s not that
much harder than five pin… actually, I think its
easier. More pins to hit, it’s a bigger target.”
Becky laughed.
“I’m going to be so bad at this.”
“No
way. Try it and I’ll
help.” Zac offered.
Becky smiled.
“One more thing…”
“Yeah?” He chuckled.
“I’ve never
played with a ball that has holes…”
Zac laughed out
loud at that.
Becky playfully
shoved his arm. “Don’t laugh at me! I come from a small town!”
“Okay, you’re
right. I’ll stop.” He still offered one last chuckle. “Come on, pick up a ball
and we’ll practice…. And if it’ll make you happy, I’ll play left-handed.”
“You’re already
left handed!” She laughed.
“Ahh, you know me too well…” He grinned. “Right handed
then.”
“Deal.” She extended her hand to shake his.
