Chapter one hundred and forty nine:

Luke sped his dirt bike to the top of a dirt hill and hit the break at the top. He leaned his bike and body to the left and placed his foot on the ground. He removed his helmet with a heavy sigh and tucked it under his left arm. With his right hand he reached for his water bottle.

In a cloud of dirt and dust, Zac came up beside him, and stopped his bike on the trail. He removed his helmet also and shouted over the roar of both their bikes. Jeeze! Slowing down already?”

“Nah,” Luke laughed. “Just needed a drink!”

“Good idea!” Zac shouted back, reaching for his own bottle of water and untwisting the cap with his gloves on. “But I know that’s not the only reason.”

“What do you mean?” Luke asked, feigning confusion.

“You’re thinking about Jen.”

“Maybe.”
Zac chuckled. “Come on, you can’t trick me.”

Luke turned the key in his bike and the engine died with a sputter. “Alright, I’m not going to lie. I miss her. It feels like this whole week has been a waste. This was my one chance to spend a whole week alone with her, and instead we’re fighting… I miss her. This time apart has just made me realize how crazy bout her I am.”

“You’re a sap, man.”

“Oh come on, you would be way worse off if you and Becky had a fight. Remember three years ago when you and Becky had to be apart? You curled up in your boxers for a week and wouldn’t even shower!”

Zac rolled his eyes, “Alright, alright. But don’t tell anyone.”

Luke twisted the cap back on his bottle of water. “Has she said anything about me?”

Zac turned off his machine and leaned the bike on his other leg. “Yeah, she has. She’s pretty upset by the whole thing.”

“Yeah? She isn’t happy we’re not-“

“Don’t say that. She’s just as miserable about the breakup as you are. The girls took her out to try to make her feel better, and it obviously didn’t work.”

“How do you know that?”

“Because she’s moping around the house. And I know because Becky told me. I think she just needs a bit of a break. Give her some space and let her realize how badly she misses you, and you’ll be together again in no time.” Zac clapped Luke on the shoulder.

Luke sighed heavily and kick started his dirt bike again. “Come on, I’ll race you to the other side of Bixby’s hill and back!” He took off suddenly with a roaring start.

Zac shook his head and decided he would let Luke win this one, but took off behind him anyway.

Christy walked from the kitchen to the living room with a glass of red wine in each hand. She placed them both on the coffee table, one in front of Isaac and the other in front of herself.

“How about this cake? It’s kind of… different.” He said, looking intently at the photo of a large six-tier cake. The blinder was balanced in his lap as he flipped through the photos.

“Honey, we only have three hundred guests. That cake serves a thousand!” She pointed to the bottom where the details of the cake were printed.

“Well… everyone can have seconds, and then take some home with them…” He reasoned.

Christy laughed. “But it’s way out of our price range.”

“I thought we agreed that price wasn’t important…” He flipped the page.
”I know, but if you don’t give me limits, this will end up being a billion dollar wedding.”

“Really? Why don’t we just elope then?” He teased.

She laughed. “Are you kidding? That would seriously disappoint your mother.”
”And what about you?” He smiled at her, finally looking up from the binder.

“I’m happy living in sin.” She teased, leaning forward and kissing him.

He chuckled, breaking the kiss slowly. “I think you’ve had a bit too much wine.”

“I haven’t even had a sip yet.” She grinned, pulling him down on top of her.

He kissed her deeply for a few moments, and then stopped, allowing an inch between their lips. “What about the cake? We really should pick one.” He teased, pushing himself up with his hands.

“You pick one.” She looped her arms around his neck.

“Okay… I saw one…” He sat up completely and flipped ahead several pages in the binder. “This one.” He pointed to an elegant four-teired cake, with the classic bride and groom statuettes on top and white rose petals scattered on it. “It’s pink, but I imagine they could easily make it with white frosting…” He looked up at her for approval. “It feeds six hundred, but we can just cut larger pieces…”

Christy smiled broadly at him. She had picked the same cake out earlier to suggest to him.

“What?” He asked, a smile spreading across his lips.

“You’re about to get the best sex of your life.”
