Chapter one hundred and forty two:
Isaac sighed heavily and dropped his forehead into his palm.
Christy uncrossed and re-crossed her arms, still prepared for a
large argument.
“Look Christy, what do you want me to do here?” He demanded,
finally looking up at her. “If I yell at you, you’re just going to do it again,
right? If I tell you the consequences of your actions, you’re just going to
shrug it off. If I tell you that it’s okay to take your two best friends- even
though you are older and supposed to be more responsible for- that makes me a
bad person. I don’t know what to do here, okay? So please tell me. Enlighten me
on what the right answer is.”
“Look, Isaac, I was trying to cheer up my best friend; my cousin?”
Christy said in an even tone, lowering herself into the chair
“Yeah, so was I. I was trying to protect you: the woman I love
from getting hurt or even killed. I was trying to keep you girls safe from whomever might be after you. So tell me who gets the
right-of-way here?” He demanded.
Christy was silent, not sure of what to say.
“I don’t even know what to say. We talked about this, and you know
just as well as anyone what these people can do, right? And you went out
anyway.”
“Isaac, just stop. Okay? Stop with the guilt
trip.” Christy cried in frustration.
“I’m not giving you a guilt trip, C. I’m trying to reason with you
and figure out why the hell you did what you did.”
“Because I was mad at you! I’ve
been planning this wedding for so long, and granted you’ve been helping, but I
wanted a break and I wanted to go out with my friends, by ourselves and I can’t
even do that! You can’t protect us by keeping us caged up like animals! That
night when they came after me, the body guard was there! When they went after
Becky, Zac was there! If that shows us anything it’s… it’s…” She swallowed with
difficulty.
“It’s what?” Isaac prompted.
“It’s that you can’t protect us.” She replied in a calmer tone.
Isaac sighed heavily, after letting what she said sink in.
“Alright. Let’s go home.”
“No, I don’t want to. I’ll stay here tonight,
or… or I’ll go to a motel.” She said quickly. She grabbed her purse and stood
up.
“That’s absurd. Come back to my place and if you want, I’ll sleep
on the sofa.”
“It’s your apartment, I won’t make you sleep on the-“
“Alright, come back to my place and we’ll talk, okay?”
She nodded. “Alright.”

Zac jogged up the stairs and walked down the hall in several long
strides.
The door to the girl’s room was slightly ajar.
He knocked on the doorframe and slowly pushed the door open.
“Becca?” He asked gently.
She was sitting in the middle of her bed, holding a pillow in her
lap and hugging it tightly.
She lifted her chin from the pillow. “Hi, Zac.”
She said timidly.
“Hey, is everything okay?” He asked, sitting next to her on her
bed.
“Yeah… um… about back there, I’m sorry I yelled, I was just really
mad about getting in trouble for a harmless act where no one got hurt.”
“Yeah, I’m kind of inclined to agree with you.”
“What?” She asked in surprise.
“I do think that its stupid for you girls to stay locked up all
the time and I think it was sweet that you tried to cheer up your best friend.”
“Really?”
“Yeah.” He stretched across her bed on
his side. “You know, I don’t think I’ve ever seen you get mad before.”
“You have too.” Becky laughed, and put the pillow back in it’s proper place. “I’m sure you’ve seen me get mad before.”
“No, no way. You’re always happy and cheery and nice.” He teased,
sitting up and mimicking her position. He placed his elbows on his knees and
leaned forward. “I’ve never seen you mad.”
Becky laughed. “Remind me to get mad at you more often.”
“I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with you getting mad…”
“Yeah?” She laughed.
”Frankly, I think it’s a little…hot.”
Becky laughed. “That’s hilarious. You don’t.”
“Yeah, I do. A little.” He grinned. He
leaned forward and kissed her.
