Chapter one hundred and forty three:

Jenna opened the fridge door and slammed it closed. With the added force, the door popped open again.

She drew in a deep breath and exhaled slowly, shutting the door more gently. She turned around, yogurt cup in hand and bumped straight into Taylor.
”Oh!” She cried in alarm. “Sorry, I didn’t see you!” She avoided eye contact.

Taylor held up a spoon. “Need this?”

She slipped the spoon from his hand. “Yes, thank you.” She walked past him to the kitchen table.

“Do you want to talk?” He asked from behind her.

“About what?” She demanded. “Because, I’m pretty sure that from where I am, it seems a little futile to talk to you.” she pulled out a stool and sat down. “I mean, either way; your mind is made up and you won’t be persuaded otherwise. So what’s the point of arguing with you?”

“That’s not what I meant.” Taylor replied, leaning against the counter. “I meant talking about what’s going on between you and Luke.”

“We’re fine.”

“You’re not fine.”

“Why do you care?” She demanded, fumbling to peel the seal off her yogurt cup. Her hands were shaking.

“Because you’re my friend. Luke is my friend. And when I talked to Luke this morning-“

“You talked to Luke? You went behind my back and talked to my boyfriend about our relationship?”

“I ran into him-“

“How could you? It was none of your damn business.”

“I was trying to help!” He snapped.

“This has nothing to do with you! I don’t need your help!”

“Well, Luke certainly did! Maybe if you tried talking to him instead of freezing him out-“

“Fuck you! I can deal with my own fucking relationship without you butting in and-“

“Jen, will you relax for just one damn second, please? What is the real issue here? Are you really pissed at Luke or are you upset that he was getting too close?

“What?”

“You do this. You push people away when they get too close. Like before, when I asked you about your weight.”

She pushed herself up from the table, leaving the yogurt unopened on the table. “I’m not going to sit here and-“

“Fine, Jen, run away like you always do.”

“Fuck you, Taylor. You hardly know me. You hardly get the chance to know anyone other than yourself. You’re so self-centered; I’m surprised you even notice that there are other people in this world.”

Jen stormed from the room and out the front door.
