Chapter one
hundred and twenty two:
Isaac was
awakened by the sound of a toilet flushing, and someone moving around in the
hospital room.
He hadn’t
remembered falling asleep, but sometime during the night, he had passed out in
a chair. He stretched his legs and his aching neck.
He moved to sit
up in the chair.
“Don’t get up,
it’s only me, and for the record I’m still pissed at you.” Christy said,
shuffling across the room.
She had banished
him from the room after their argument the night before. However when she had
fallen asleep, he snuck back in, simply to make himself feel better. He needed
to watch her every second to be sure she was safe. He intended to sit up all
night and watch over her, but he had been exhausted and fallen asleep.
“Christy,” He
said evenly, watching as she shuffled across the room and sat on the bed, “I
don’t want to fight anymore.”
“Good for you.”
She sat and jerked her IV out of her hand.
“What are you
doing? You can’t do that!” He stood up in alarm. “You haven’t been discharged.”
“It doesn’t
matter. I’ll check out against medical advice. I’m over eighteen, they can’t
hold me here.”
“No, but I can.”
He crossed the room and grasped her arm tightly, sitting her back down on the
bed. “You’re not leaving until the doctors say you can.”
“Let go!” She
pulled her arm away.
He sighed
heavily and dropped to his knees in front of her so he could be somewhat
eyelevel with her. “Honey, look, I know you’re upset. I was upset last night
too, and I said some things I didn’t mean. All that stuff I said about
following my dream and being a musician…” He drew in a deep breath. “You’re in
there too. Maybe I don’t have the proportions worked out yet, but you’re very
much a part of my dream. I want to marry you, and have children with you and
spend the rest of my life with you… all that stuff I said last night was simply
because I was upset. You scared me, when I walked in and saw you lying there
barely breathing… I thought I’d lost you forever… I was so scared… I guess I
just acted out in anger.”
Christy sighed
and leaned forward. “Why didn’t you just say that?”
“I… I don’t
know… Maybe because I’m a guy?” He chuckled. “I don’t
know. I was just upset, okay?”
She nodded
slowly. “You don’t think I did this on purpose?”
“Christy…” He
began.
“No, don’t try
to talk your way out of it, just answer the question.” She shook her head.
He drew in a
deep breath, “if you say you didn’t. If you say that someone
else did this to you, then I believe you.”
”Thank you.” She breathed. Then she smiled. “Now are you going to hug me
or what?”

She squinted at
the display board as
“Um,
nothing. It’s okay, I
can get it.” Jenna reached for her purse.
“Yeah? Well I offered first, so I’m getting
it.”
Jenna narrowed
her eyes. “Yeah? Then what’s the most expensive thing
on the menu?”
He laughed. “Don’t
be a pain in the ass.”
“Fine.” She smiled. “The
usual. Green tea.”
They placed
their orders, along with an order for both Isaac and Christy.
While they waited for their coffees to be made, Jenna stole a glance at her
phone again to see if Luke had
called.
“Still nothing?”
“No. He hasn’t
called.” Jenna sighed, tucking the phone back into her purse so she wouldn’t
have to look at it any longer.
“He’ll call.”
“How do you know
that?”
“I know because
he’s crazy about you.”
Jenna pushed her
dark hair back from her face. “I know.”
Jen smiled,
“Okay. I’ll just… wait.”
“Or you could
call him…”
“Would that seem
desperate?” She asked, opening the car door and taking the tray so he could
drive.
Jen laughed. “I
might.”
