These are the playlists for the shows that I've done on CKCU. I try and update this page as the show airs, letting you know what's currently playing, but it's probably best to give me a day to get it up here with artist links and everything. If you'd like to listen to me, my show broadcasts Monday mornings, 10:00 'til 11:30 AM Eastern, and can be heard in Ottawa, Canada, western Quebec and northern New York state by tuning into 93.1 FM, and it is also available worldwide via the Internet and streaming Real Audio by going to CKCU's audio page. More recent playlists can be found here.
If you'd like to purchase anything you've heard on the show, I've created a page with links to stores that may be able to help you out.

Today marks CKCU's 29th birthday (hence the first Aphex song). It also marks 5 years to the day that I had to give up the Monday morning, 10-noon slot, but that's less important. Nick Cave was played because of my English teacher saying "Kicking against the pricks as they might say. From the Bible. Or the Nick Cave album," in class last week (and let me play Birthday Party in honour of the station's birthday; in retrospect my initial plan of Neubauten-Bad Seeds-Party was the better sequence. First thought, best thought...). Parliament and NY Dolls were because I read Shelley's Frankenstein over the weekend. Stewart because I watched the 2 Office Xmas specials last night. ODB/Wu Tang in honour of the passing/36th birthday of Osiris. Sensational, Len, Large Prof and Techno Animal as a little spotlight on ill-fated Matador Hip Hop series. NIN because I had the bassline in my head this weekend. No hits to the website. Funding drive got my hopes up.

The inspiration behind this show was an article on iPods in last weeks tech section of the Citizen. One of the writers marveled over the "Random" feature of the machine, tossing off names of artists in different genres, and wondered why radio couldn't be that way. I took it as a challenge. Initially what I was going to do was print out all off these playlists, cut the tracks into individual scaps of paper and pull 20 of them out of a hat and make that the show, but instead I just decided to play a lot of songs from different genres and see if I could make it flow (Modern Lovers thru Arab Strap aired uninterupted by my talking). As good as hearing Napalm Death into Brian Eno into Patsy Cline into Kandis sounds in theory, it doesn't make for good listening in actuality, so I did it my way.
Jonathan Richman is in town Thursday; it was Neil Young's birthday yesterday. Richman is currently on Young's Vapor record label. See if you can figure out the flow after that. Our game'll continue in the next episode!

Funding Drive 2004, Episode 2: I made $268.10 in an hour and a half. Thank you for donating: Ryan B., Claude H., Derek B., Marius S., Andrea S-K., Alnoor A., Chris I. I just realised that I got too nervous starting up the show and forgot to make my mention of John Peel's passing, and the aftermath in which people talked about how important his radio show had been on them, which was largely my reasoning for playing the Joy Division session. D'oh. Actually, I was a little under the weather and forgot a whole bunch of things I wanted to say. MDID was a non-specific song request from last week.

Breakdown: Hazlewood and Chijuas were played due to their current seasonal timeliness (in the course of my hour and a half show, it went from gray to sunny to rainy outside); G2G thru Coltrane is probably as close as I'll ever get to my long threatened "Nothing But Train Songs" show ("O-Train" also came on the heels of telling people to take a ride on it to enjoy the changing colours witnessed between Carleton and South Keys); Dylan was due to his autobiography being released the next day; Palace Bros was because Ryan of Whatever's Cool with Me played a Sebadoh cover of it the week before; Metallica because they were in town later in the week.

Another episode where the website got no hits?! What happened to all my Thursday morning listeners?! Well, for anybody who's reading this in the future, this is how the show came together: Julie Doiron and Forever Changes were played in honour of the tenth anniversary of the release of Eric's Trip's second (and best) LP, Forever Again; ACR thru Happy Mondays was because I watched 24 Hour Party People last week (oddly, the Mondays' track was the only thing that was an honest to Pete Factory Records' release); Go4 thru Wire was because I'm sick of reading stories by people doing Sony's marketing people's work for them by using a 25th anniversary release of a record to proclaim it "The Best Album Ever!" or other such silly hyperbole, when the band/album aren't very good, and there were far more interesting albums messing around with punk rock than some bar band release that year (in addition to the records played, add Cut, Unknown Pleasures, Live at the Witch Trials and Singles Going Steady to the Class of 1979); Rufus was played because I happened to catch his performance from Wattstax on TV a few weeks back, and was completely bowled over by the sights and sounds. Watching the crowd of people dancing during his performance is insane.

No hits to the website, no calls, no e-mails. I still got it! Leonard Cohen turns 70 tomorrow, hence the song, seven poems and a cover. I'd completely forgotten that Mike Johnson and Mark Lanegan had done all those Sub Pop LPs together, and played the two back to back because I thought they sounded good together.
