Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

SEO - SEARCH ENGINE MARKETING EXPLAINED !

Please do yourself a favor and read this article in it's entirety.

This is the most important part of an internet investment marketing strategy. It is even more important than the graphic design in most cases. The reason is, buyers and potential clients can usually find there suppliers through search engines. Statistics show 85 percent of online purchasers both commercial and private use organic links. Organic links are the non-paid listings that come up when a user types in there inquiry on a search engine. Most buyers/customers click on 2 or more links, therefore statistics will add up to over 100 percent. Latest statistics show 85 percent of purchaser use search engines to find the products and services they wish to purchase. That's a lot of market share basically being distributed by search engines. 85 percent of those purchasers click on the "organic links" while only 35 percent ever use the "Pay Per Click". While Pay Per Click can be an effective tool, organic search engine marketing is proven far more effective. As an SEO (Search Engine Optimizer) I recommend a combination of these strategies in order to get the most out of your investment. White Hat/black Hat SEO, Live Coverage from SES Chicago

High Rankings .com

Danny introduced Jill as the "Queen of White Hat SEO".
Jill's presentation:
Who is better? White hat or black hat? Better person, better SEO, better money maker? Who's to say? That's not what it's about.
Black hats are big time spammers- in fields like affiliate marketing, Viagra... it's up to the engines to sort out what's acceptable and what's not.
Jill's wind up- most sites don't need black hat techniques...

Danny introduced Alan Perkins as the white knight of SEO.
Alan questioned whether or not to do this session at all. He doesn't use "hat" analogies and doesn't really like the words.
He showed a chart illustrating the difference between white hat and black hat seo practices.
Basically, black hats hide things, they don't design for humans, pages and links are designed for bots, not people.
White hat techniques focus on content and people-oriented improvements to the site.
White and black hats are equally capable of doing a bad job.
Black hats tend to see engines as "the enemy"; SEO a "war to be won". White hats tend to view engines as friendly.
White hats tend to work with the primary or main domain, black hats tend to work with disposable domains.
White hat- relevance of the site is typically improved. Black hat focuses on making a site appear more relevant to search engines than it actually is.
White and black hat techniques are both capable of returning profitable results.
Black hats tend to focus on short term, white hats long term although not always the case.
The terminology of ethical is used a lot... identify the stakeholders in the process. The ethical solution is the one that brings about the best solutions for all stakeholders, including the searcher, webmaster, and engine.
Some black hat techniques should be illegal; deceptive advertising, advertising masquerading as real results.

The final speaker was Greg Boser. Greg suggested that SEM stands for Search Engine Manipulation. He questioned whether aggressive search engine manipulation was really bad for the brand, citing examples of many major companies that cloak without penalty. Greg finished by stating that full disclosure to clients of the tactics being used and the risks being taken was essential.

My presentation was only one slide, consisting of the following table:

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
Well here comes the scary part. While many experts say one thing, others say the complete opposite. How do you choose whats right for your site? Here are some exerts from a recent SEO convention. Although I have chosen to insert bits and pieces that I feel are most beneficial to our style of marketing, I would encourage you to read the article in its entirety for your self and make an informed decision as to your next SEM move. Things Internet Marketing Directors should consider before deciding which Search Engine Marketing techniques to use. Black hat techniques are used for disposable sites, due to the high risk of being banned for unethical practices. Once your site is banned, just close the site, you will probably never be listed again. I personally, don't mind which decision a client takes, just keep in mind, once banned, once buried. That is to say, the listing will more than likely never be un-banned again. This is quite a risk for a primary domain/site, not to mention the risk to your investment in programming. White hat techniques are generally used for permanent/primary domains. They tend to be slower to build ranking but there is less risk for being banned as well as a better opportunity for long term high rankings. You are welcome to use a black hat service first and try it, but once your banned not even I can help. I will gladly take the business at a later time provided I have the free resources but, the damage done is very difficult if not impossible to repair. Either way, I wanted you to understand the strategies and consequences for sites and optimization techniques I have sited several references to the subject on this page. I encourage your firm to further investigate which method is right for you. Thanks for your interest in working with me and I hope to work with your company in the future.

SEO Defined

Definition: Short for search engine optimization, the process of increasing the amount of visitors to a Web site by ranking high in the search results of a search engine. The higher a Web site ranks in the results of a search, the greater the chance that that site will be visited by a user. It is common practice for Internet users to not click through pages and pages of search results, so where a site ranks in a search is essential for directing more traffic toward the site. SEO helps to ensure that a site is accessible to a search engine and improves the chances that the site will be found by the search engine.
