mentalità aperta/chiusa. Regardless of the number or gender of the person(s)
being described, this expression is invariable and the adjective
modifies the noun "mentalità", not the person.
Mio padre è di mentalità chiusa.
I miei amici sono di mentalità aperta.
di
sinistra / di destra. In
this expression, "sinistra" and "destra" are nouns, and the expression
is invariable, regardless of the number or gender of the person(s)
whose politics you're talking about.
Mio padre è di destra.
Tutti i miei amici sono di sinistra.
impegnato/a. This
is the adjective most often used to describe someone who is "busy,"
i.e., a person who has a commitment or several commitments (or engagements).
rompiscatole. This
adjective is invariable. It is also often used as noun. It is
invariable when used in this way as well. This is typical of nouns
and adjectives that are compounds of more than one word. (rompere
+ scatole... someone who breaks boxes)
ambientarsi.
to
adjust oneself, i.e., to adapt oneself
to one's surroundings. (Not to adjust the controls
on a device, for example.)
crescere. an
intransitive verb that indicates a change in state or condition;
therefore conjugated with essere.
Sometimes used as a transitive verb (i.e., with a direct object)
and then conjugated with avere.
Sono cresciuto a Firenze ma adesso abito a Milano. I
grew up in Florence but now I live in Milan.
Quella signora ha cresciuto i figli senza l'aiuto del marito. That
lady raised her children without the help of her husband.
mancare. literally,
"to be absent."
Mi mancano cinquanta euro per poter pagare l'affitto. I'm
missing (I still need) fifty euros in order to pay the rent.
Gli manca molto la famiglia ora che vive così lontano. He
misses his family a lot now that he lives so far away.
In any case, the thing that is absent, the thing whose absence
is felt, is the subject; the person who feels or is affected
by this absence is the indirect object. Conjugated with essere.
ringraziare. the
person to whom thanks are expressed is the direct object; the
thing for which one is grateful is the object of preposition di.
Ho ringraziato la signora Fantini della sua ospitalità. I
thanked Mrs Fantini for her hospitality.
sostenere. this
verb is conjugated like tenere: tengo, tiene, tieni; sostengo,
sostieni, sostiene, etc.
ubbidire;
obbedire. either
spelling is correct. The person to whom obedience is given is the
indirect object of this verb.
I soldati ubbidiscono al maresciallo. The soldiers obey the field
marshal.
il
comportamento. behavior.
The verb "to behave" is comportarsi.
Quei ragazzi si comportano sempre bene a scuola.
