Santa Folk are plaster figures that are individually cast in rare antique chololate molds.  When the figure is removed from the mold there are always imperfections like air bubbles, seam lines or small holes that need to be repaired before the figure can be painted.  These repairs are made with various tools like knives, files, sandpaper, and modeling compound to fill dents or holes in the plaster.  The base of the figure must be perfectly flat.  This is accomplished by laying a piece of sandpaper on a flat surface and sanding the base until the figure will stand without wobbling. The Santa Folk figure is now ready for a base coat  which will give a nice smooth surface on which to paint.  When the base coat is dry, the figure is hand painted in the style reminiscent of old chalkware figures.  Each figure takes 15 to 20 hours to complete.  When the painting is finished and dry, 2 coats of varnish complete the figure.  All Santa Folk chalkware is signed and dated.
