ITF programme July-October 2008

 

 

 

Sunday 17th August 2pm: Visit to Grey Abbey and Rosemount Estate.  We hope to see some of the oldest oaks in Northern Ireland.  The walk will be followed by a picnic at Claire McCully�s farm.  Meet at the car park beside the Cistercian Abbey ruins at the top of Greyabbey village at 2 pm. Sunday 31st August, 2 pm:  Visit to Necarne, Irvinestown, Co Fermanagh. 

Meet on the Enniskillen � Irvinestown A32 Road at entrance to Necarne Forest (Grid reference H244570), this is 1.5 km from Irvinestown, opposite Fermanagh District Council�s recycling centre.  After passing through an attractive forest area managed by Forest Service we will reach Necarne Castle situated in the Castle Irvine Demesne, where there are many ancient trees.  The estate is named after Christopher Irvine who bought the 1613 built house and bawn.  The present castle was built in the 19th century, keeping the original 17th century round towers at the back of the castle. The Irvines were in residence until 1922.The Park is now managed by DARD and plays host to many equestrian events.

 

Sun 28th September: Guided walk round Dr Michael Scott�s arboretum in Ballyskeagh, Dunmurry, Co Down.  Dr Scott has planted a remarkable arboretum of 500 exotic trees in addition to an area of forest on his land and has collected detailed data on the growth of each tree.
