Biodiversity of Trees
Biodiversity of Trees

Investigate the biodiversity of plants in a given area of 8-2 meter transect, specifically for trees.

Observe the morphotypes in each of the transects.

Table 1: Descriptions of Transects

Transect

Observations

1

A closed canopy forest in the immediate vicinity of a small forest stream.  Eight meters longs and two meters wide.  Total area is 16 m2.

2

A forest gap in the close vicinity of a small forest stream. Eight meters longs and two meters wide.  Total area is 16 m2.

Table 2: Morphotypes with General Descriptions and Observations

Morphotype

Observations

A

Bush with alternating leaves, which are slender and oval.  Light-colored stem.

B

Bush with compound leaves, which are fat and oval.  Abaxial surface of leaf contains alternating veins.

C

Bush with slender stem and compound leaves, which have serrated edges.  Abaxial surface of leaf contains alternating veins.  Segmented stem.

D

Small bush with slender but bumpy stem and alternating leaves.  Abaxial surface of leaf contains alternating veins.

E

Tree with a thick trunk and compound leaves.  Twisted buttress.  Approximate height of six meters.  Distinctive centipedes found on the bark of the trunk.

F

Tree with slender trunk, which is covered in small spines.  Leaves are heart-shaped and compound.

G

Tree with a medium-sized trunk and very small leaves, which are compound and tear-drop shaped.  Approximately six meters tall.

H

Tree with a large rigid trunk.  Approximate height of 12 meters. 8 “leaves” originate from a single stem.  Long, slender buttresses.

I

Vine with no leaves, a rectangular stem, and large triangular spines perpendicular to the surface of the stem.

J

Bush with red stems and compound leaves, which are fat and oval.
