Notes about ISPF/ftp

ISPF/ftp's "Edit" does not currently use prefix ("line") commands but instead uses the standard GUI-type text area for editing (similar to Notepad). The line command functions have not been implemented, though some may be added in the future; i.e. the "Prefix" line commands like "XX" (exclude lines), "TF" (text flow) , and specific-column commands (like "FIND 'xyz' 2 20") are not currently implemented.

A dynamic user-controlled disconnect/reconnect to the FTP server is available using toolbar buttons. An automated reconnect after a timeout is planned for a later release.

An FTP connection is required to read and write the data on mainframe, but is not required to edit data once it is displayed. Toolbar buttons are available to dynamically disconnect and/or reconnect. If the user is "timed-out" by the FTP server, the user need only click the "reconnect" button when access to the server is required. The user's password is optionally saved to simplify reconnection.

The use of PF Keys to scroll left and right is not implemented yet, but is expected to be in a later version. Mouse scrolling, however, can be used horizontally or vertically where needed. PF Key scrolling (and/or command-line scrolling) is so far implemented only for up and down.

Edit supports standard GUI functions "Copy", "Cut" and "Paste".

Edit has an unlimited "undo/redo" capability.

ISPF/ftp can be used with an FTP server on any host; it is not limited to IBM's MVS operating system, though any MVS-specific features will only work on an MVS system (i.e. you can only submit jobs and retrieve job output from an MVS system).

Edit has a "save as ..." menu option to allow saving data locally.

ISPF/ftp does not use option 6 for TSO commands, since it not in any way connected to a TSO system. Instead, Option 6 can be used to enter FTP commands. Note however, that in ISPF/ftp Option 6 , any FTP commands must be typed exactly as required by the FTP host server. See the "Help" included in the program for FTP command format, or see the FTP Protocol description at: http://sunsite.dk/RFC/rfc/rfc959.html.

FTP data transfers are done by a separate thread (or " process") so the GUI is not locked during large file transfers.
