Good evening Localistas! Welcome to the second edition of the The Localist- The Localist Party Newsletter! Hopefully you've been paying attention to the site and have noticed that we are steadily expanding and growing. We have added a Spotlight section, highliting the merits of two special sites, The Olympia Food Coop and Saving Communities.org. Please check them out as they are doing wonders for the localist movement. I would also like to thank the people who have given positive feedback to our blog posts. In the future we plan to have a forum as well, so all can benefit from interacting with each other. We plan to do this real so so keep checking the site for future additions. What I would like to do in the meantime is set up a general chat on IRC once we get more subscribers so we can interchange ideas on localism and The Localist Party in general. Like I mentioned in last week's post we would like to start out as a think tank or "brain trust" to quote O Brother Where Art Thou. For now I would like to ask the viewing audience what you think it means to be a localist, to care about localism and localist politics? Would you like to learn more? Has anyone read anything by Henry George or Daniel Quinn? What about Emerson and on transcendentalism or economics as written on by Thomas Paine, John Locke, or Richard Ricardo? Have you read my manifesto? Would you like to be or have you ever been involved in local or third party politics or any demonstrations? What do you think of the prospect? What do you think of the greens and libertarians? Do you know some of their commonalities and differences? Would you like to see an alliance? I personally would. And can forsee it. Eco-decentralisation and personal/econmic liberties go hand in hand. So why isn't it being done, you might ask. Because it demands compromise. When I first came acrossed geolibertarianism I thought, "Wow! This is the movement for me!" With a hint of socialism and tribalism it might just work. You see, geoism (geolibertarianism, for the the wordy) favors what is known in geoist circles as a land value tax. Landlords implement such an idea, so why can't the government? I delved deeper. Basically we are a two party system. The Republicans and the Democrats. The Republicans are a political party based on conservativism. When it comes to economic freedom, they are all over it. But when it comes to personal issues, they would be just as happy if everyone went to church on Sunday and had sex through a hole in a sheet. Creating in the end a theocratic corpocracy. Boo. The Democrats aren't much better. They are considered liberal. And I was one for awhile, so I should know. When it comes to personal issues, the dems would be happy with a college lovefest (YAY!), just as long as everything was taxed and everyone paid homage to the government. Giving rise, in the end, a bloated beaurocracy. Again, boo. Good things about the Republicans, economic liberty. Democrats, personal liberty. Hence, libertarians and the Libertarian Party. So why am I not a Big L Libertarian? The libertarians are basically just republicans who want to be hippies and smoke pot while screwing on the DC Mall. They're disengenuous. And don't really want to help the environment. They just want to smoke and fuck, smoke and fuck, smoke and fuck, and let the government dwindle to nothing while the neo-feudal lords at Nike and Halliburton become the new ringleaders. Hence, the greens and the Green Party. So why am I not a Big G Green? Too many taxes. The greens have a lot of good ideas and are very genuine, but they're one thing that I cannot stand and that's bearocratic. Can't stand pencil pushers. Ergo the Localist Party. And the Localist Party was born. What we believe in is simple. Small government by limiting taxes to a single tax, that on land value and the rich (while they still exist) and small business by having cooperation over competition. We are a geoist party and a party of Geoism. By attempting to reach a compromise between libertarian values of personal and economic liberty with decentralization and some taxation, as favored by the greens we can reach a happy medium. People can do what they want, in any way they want, as long as the people themselves and the Earth from which they came are safe. This is geoism at it's core. Sounds pretty simple doesn't it? That's because it is. And it should be noted that this is a party for everyone. We are neither moralistic nor beaurocratic. We are genuine and we are revolutionary. We're the political party you can take home to home and dad will happily pay for the wedding. Why this hasn't been done before is a mystery. But we need your help. By telling us what you think localism and geoism means would further our movement. Don't be shy about asking or telling. Interaction is what we are all about. We want to rebuild our sytem at the very fundemental level, the person to person level. The community level. We want to work from the bottom up. And we are poor. But that's okay! Because people who need people are the most wonderful people. I hope this newsletter was most helpful in explaining our purpose. Get back to us, we need all the support we can get to keep this site running and the newsletter going. Share with your friends, your family and do a little research in the interim. You might just find out something about yourself and realize we are the party for you! Thank you and until next time, this is Lucas signing off. Lucas C. Werner, The Localist Party |
