2008 BEREAN BULLETINS

DECEMBER 2008

The Light of the World

I am the light of the world. He who follows ME shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life …John 8:12

One dark and ominous night during World War II, a US aircraft carrier was plowing through heavy seas in the South Pacific. All lights were out because of enemy submarines. One plane was missing. Somewhere in that pitch-black sky it was circling in a seemingly futile search for the carrier – its only landing place, its only hope of not being swallowed up by the giant ocean. The ship’s captain, knowing the terrible risk involved, gave the order, "Light up the ship." Soon the plane zoomed onto the deck like a homing pigeon.

At Bethlehem, knowing the risk, God gave the command, Light up the world. "Then Jesus was born. A new and radiant light began to shine, pushing back the darkness of the world, of spiritual ignorance, and of sin and despair. Like a ship lit up in an otherwise darkened sea of sinful humanity, Christ came as "light of the world" (John 8:12). John wrote, "The darkness is passing away, and the true light is already shining" (1 John 2:8) . When Jesus the Savior entered this world, it was like the sunrise breaking radiantly over the horizon of human history (Luke 1:78-79).

In fathomless grace, God allowed His Son to die on the cross to save us from eternal darkness. What a blessed message for Christmas – and every day of the year!

Long ago in Bethlehem

One cold and starry night,

Jesus came from heaven above

To bring us love and light

Without the light of Jesus, we would be in the dark about God.

    NOVEMBER 2008

God hears the cries of His People

Hear a just cause, O Lord, Attend to my cry: Give ear to my prayer, which is not from deceitful lips Psalm 17:1

Prayer originated in the heart of God, our Father, God, the Holy Spirit, hovers over the church, awaiting prayers that are prayed according to God’s Word, who became flesh and dwelt among us. Just as in days gone by so shall it be again. God’s people pray, He hears their prayers, and events occur according to His plan.

Jesus spoke about interaction of the Holy Spirit and the praying church: "Rivers of living water will flow out from within"(John 7:38,NLT). This living water will go forth into the desert places repairing the waste places, reviving ancient ruins that have lain there many generations. The living water is for the healing of the nations (Rev 22:2) Did God not say: "Ask of Me, and I will give You the nations for Your inheritance, and the ends of the earth for Your possession" (Ps2:8)?

In these last days a multitude of God’s people who are called to be watchmen on the wall are observing the signs, and prayer is uttered according to His Word. The prayers that go forth are powerful scriptural prayers filling the heavens, preparing the way for the manifestation of the sons of God, and every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord

God is watching over His Word to perform it. The church is His voice in the earth, and when we pray in agreement with the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, we can be confident of this very thing: So shall My word be that goes forth out of My mouth: it shall not return to Me void (without producing any effect, useless), but it shall accomplish that which I please and purpose, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it – Isaiah 55:11, AMP

    OCTOBER 2008

    Do The Right Thing

Receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, judgment, and equity. Proverbs 1:3

Management expert Peter Drucker once wrote that too often people focus on efficiency (doing things right), instead of on effectiveness (doing the right thing). "There are few things less pleasing to the Lord and less productive," Drucker says, "than an engineering department that rapidly turns out beautiful blueprints for the wrong product. Working on the right things is what makes…work effective." Those are wise words for anyone seeking business success, and for those trying to live a good life.

How can we be sure we are doing the right thing – that which is morally correct and pleasing to God – instead of doing the wrong thing in an efficient way? Solomon wrote his proverbs so that his son would "receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, judgment and equity." Or, as one translation puts it, to acquire "a disciplined and prudent life, doing what is right and just and fair"

Through His word and the guidance of the Holy Spirit, God will teach us what is right and enable us to do it. Our most important task is doing what is grounded "justice, judgment and equity."

Today, by God’s wisdom and power, let’s do the right thing

    Quotation from Rev. Susan Tang

    Founder, Station of Life

"Nation-building always comes with a price – the price of diligent prayers

When the world has no answer and can no longer be controlled by the armies, politicians, counsellors, scientists, etc because of the upsurge of evil, God has His answer in His distinct people who will pray. Through their upright living, their consistent and accumulated prayers they can unleash the power to ‘hedge’ or to guard the nation

May the Malaysian Church rule out all activities that have no eternal validity and return to a perpetual flow of deliberate consistent, persistent, focused, self-denying and accurate prayers."

    SEPTEMBER 2008

    Secret source of strength

There is a secret source of strength for this battle we are engaged in, which we will be wise to avail ourselves of constantly.

It is in communing with Jesus. Holding a feast with Him in our hearts, worshipping Him, loving Him, adoring Him, conscious of His presence continually-here is the instrument perfectly adjusted to the Master’s touch. The emptied vessel is filled with the constantly inflowing and outflowing water of life. His breath is our breath. The life that flows in the Head of the body is the life that flows in the veins of the body, and this walk of communion reality to us. Our eyes are not on the waves at our feet, but they rest on the face of Jesus.

Distractions and distresses come in only when our gaze falls. When we look down at the sea of life over which we are walking, restless, unstable, changing, that restlessness seizes us. We are perplexed and beaten about by waxes. We are sinking out of our element. We do not belong in that sea. Those waves should concern us little. Our walk is above them.

Lord, I want to commune with You so closely that I am always conscious of your precious presence. Lead me there, Lord.

    AUGUST 2008

    The Delights of Prayer

Come, let us bow down in worship,

Let us kneel before the Lord our Maker Psalm 95:6

In worship, God reveals His heart to us, compelling us to contemplate Him, admire Him and humble ourselves in His presence, recognizing that although we aren’t worthy, we are His children.

Worship leads us to prayer. In worship, we contemplate: in prayer, we come into communion with the heart of God. In worship, we marvel. In prayer, we get closer; we touch the heart of God, and His heart touches ours.

The heart of God is His character, His will, His purposes and His thoughts. In prayer, my spirit becomes one with the Spirit of God. My will becomes completely one with the will of God. My thoughts become one with God’s thoughts. After gazing at God’s heart through worship, a clamor rises in me, "God, I want to be like You! Change me!"

When we see God’s heart and long for it, then we reach His heart.

Lord, let the worship in my heart spill over into a prayer life that blesses Your heart

    Fervent Prayer

Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. (James 5:16)

James was the "effectual, fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much." It is one thing to say a prayer, and quite another to pray a prayer – to prevail in prayer with God.

Prevailing prayer leads us to a nearness with God. We get intimate and stand in holy awe before God. Prevailing prayer conquered Esau, and stopped the mouths of the lions when Daniel was in the lions’ den. Elijah prevailed with God, and it rained not for three and a half years.

Again, he prayed, and there was great rain. Esther prayed the prayer of faith for her people, the Jews, and they were delivered from Haman.

The Prayer of faith and fastings bring the power of God. Bloody Mary (Mary Queen of Scots) said, "I fear the prayers of John Knox more than all the armies of Europe:.

Her death warrant was signed in Heaven as John Knox cried, "Give me Scotland or I die!" Martin Luther also prevailed with God when the emperor of Germany resolved to proclaim religious tolerance. Luther exclaimed, "Deliverance has come, deliverance has come. "When the church of Christ as a body gets down to this kind of prayer, we will see the gifts brought back more fully, and see the world brought to Christ

Lord, I purpose to prevail in prayer with You. Teach me how to do it by Your Spirit. Amen

     JUNE 2008

    A FATHER’S BLESSING

A man who was grieving the death of his father said, "I am crying not only for my father, but for me. His death means that I'll never hear the words I always wanted to hear from him: that he was proud of me, proud of the family I've raised and the life I've lived."

Instead of repeating his father's mistake, the man later gave his own son the words of encouragement he himself had never heard, saying he was proud of him and the life he had made.

Too often, tension between fathers and children are left unresolved. Old wounds remain unhealed, We are unwilling to forgive the angry words and hurts from the past. But for the sake of our families, and ourselves, we need to do what we can to dismantle the walls of separation between us.

How can we begin? The Bible's command for all our relationships is: "Love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be courteous, not returning evil for evil of reviling for reviling, but on the contrary blessing... Turn away from evil and do good; ... seek peace and pursue it" (I Peter 3:8-9,11).

Let's determine by God's grace to break the cycle of anger, and give our children what they long to hear from us-words of blessing, and love.

Our children need to know we care,
    That when they need us we'll be there;
For deep within they need to hear
That they are loved by someone dear.

The best thing you spend on your children is your time.

    MAY 2008

    INFLUENCE OF GODLY MOMS

Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her [Proverbs 31:28]

Many people have been richly blessed by what they learned at their mother’s knee. Consider John and Charles Wesley. Their names would probably never have lighted the pages of history if it hadn’t been for their godly mother who taught them that the law of love and Christian witness was to be their daily guide.

Susannah Wesley spent one hour each day praying for her 17 children. In addition, she took each child aside for a full hour every week to discuss spiritual matters with him or her. No wonder John and Charles were used of God to bring blessing around the world.

Here are a few rules she followed in training her children: Subdue self-will in a child and work together with God. Teach him to pray as soon as he can speak. Give him nothing he cries for and only what is good for him if he asked for it politely. To prevent lying, punish no fault that is freely confessed, but never allow a rebellious, sinful act to go unchecked. Commend and reward good behavior. Strictly observe all promises you have made to your child.

Let us honor our godly mothers today, not only with words of praise for them but with lives that reflect the impact of their holy influence

Of all the earthly things God gives,

    There’s one above all others:

It is the precious, priceless gift

    Of loving Christian Mothers

The virtues of mothers are visited on their children.

Blessing And Prayer To All Mothers

    "Blessed be all mothers
Who have come into our lives
    Whose kindness, care and loving
    Remain with us to guide.

    Your inspiration in us
Made us strive in every way
    Especially to remember
    Helping others makes our day.

    Mothers, this little tribute
    Flows directly from my heart
You are so loved and cherished
Invaluable, one and all, you are.

    APRIL 2008

    RICE MONEY

In the province of Mizoram in India lives a group of Christians who have discovered a unique way to give to the work of the Lord. As the woman of the house prepares meals for her family, meals that consist primarily of rice, she measures out, just enough rice to feed her family.

Then, before she cooks that rice, she reaches into the dish, grabs a handful, and takes it out. This she sets aside until Sunday, when she takes it to church and combines it with the rice, brought by other women. The church then sells it and uses the proceeds to support missionary projects.

One of the items purchased was a computer that is being used to help the Mizo people complete a translation of the Bible in their language.

It would be easy for people without much money to look at the little they have and decide it's not worth giving. Likewise, it would have been easy for the widow in Luke 21 to feel inadequate with her two small coins, when she saw the large amounts the rich people put in the temple treasury.

God isn't interested in the amount as much as He is in a heart of sacrifice. That's why Jesus said the widow put in more than all the others (v.3). Can we honestly say that our giving is sacrificial?

The gifts we offer to the Lord

    Are by His standards measured;

Our sacrifice and lives of praise-

Such gifts are highly treasured. --sper

    MARCH 2008

    A NEW SEASON

God will take us to a new spiritual season in our lives, Isaiah 43:18-19. It is divinely inspired for us to enter into it. Number 8 has many significant meanings, it is a strategic and symbolic number depicting memorials events. It is also the number of new beginnings, changes, new trends and innovations. 8 also depicts new creations, conventions and consecrations associated with circumcision. It is also a number that inspires the pioneering spirit and points to the hope of transformation. This will be season of renewal of love, passion, commitment and consecration to God. With this we declare that God will visit us again so that we may break forth and extend our boundaries.

God promises us that He will do a new thing in the church. In order for us to receive His full blessing, there are a few things we must do. First let us forget the former things, we must put behind those things in the past and press forward in the things of God. Secondly, we must ask for a greater level of cleansing so that God will come and dwell with His presence and Glory. Thirdly position ourselves through prayer, fasting and studying His word to discern His direction and purposes. Lastly, let us also lay hold of his promises through faith to reach our calling and destine.

    FEBRUARY 2008

    Altar Building

"And the Lord appeared unto Abram, and said, Unto thy seed will I give this land: and there builded he an altar unto the Lord, who appeared unto him" (Genesis 12:7).

This is the first reference to Abraham building an altar in Scripture. Building an altar and making sacrifice to God denotes total dependence and reliance on Him. It implies saying no to self and yes to God -- in effect presenting one's self in submission to God as a sinner, trusting Him for gracious handling of one's sin, and discounting one's value apart from His work. Building altars became a habit with godly Abraham, the "Friend of God" (James 2:23), and he practiced it many times during his life (see also Genesis 12:8; 13:4,18). We can surmise that at an early age, Abraham's son, Isaac, was taught this same practice. It doesn't seem that Isaac misunderstood or debated the situation, even when he himself was identified as the sacrifice to be slaughtered (Genesis 22:9). He fully trusted and worshiped the same God, and evidently agreed with Abraham's obedient act. Later, Isaac, himself, practiced altar-building at least once on his own (26:25). Compare Abraham and his family to Lot and his family. Nowhere in Scripture does it say that Lot built an altar and recognized God as worthy of worship. No doubt as a direct result, Lot's wife, sons, and daughters totally rejected these ideas, preferring the sinful practices and mentality of Sodom. Lot was a true believer (II Peter 2:7-8), but his lifestyle and lack of "altar-building" rubbed off on his family, to the detriment of himself and the people of God ever since. Here is the question: Do we want to be Christians who ignore proper worship and total submission to God and have families who do likewise? We don't build physical altars today, but we do need daily times of family prayer. JDM
