Day5: 6th Dec'03, Saturday "Lion's day out"

Got up early (0500hrs) and set out at 0615hrs. We saw the hot air balloon safari passing over the plains. Passed by a flock of Sand Grouse. Drove past Maasai Kopjes and came upon a pride of 8 lioness, 2 males and 4 cubs. An old male was busy chewing on a zebra carcass and the other lioness' were setting their sights on a herd of zebra and gnu grazing in the distance. Instinct told us to wait and watch....and what we saw was straight out of National Geographic! Two young lioness started moving towards the herd of zebra and gnu. Crouching low in the grass, they stalked out an unlucky zebra....and in flat 10 seconds chased thru the galloping herd and killed the zebra.

The kill sequence.....

After all the excitement, we drove back to our camp for a sumptuous brunch...and 40 winks.

Set out at 1530hrs and drove back to Maasai Kopje. The pride of lions were still there and looked content....
