(Ann's history kindly supplied by Phil Howe and Jenny Nancarrow)

Ann was born in 1767 and at the age of 21 was convicted of stealing a bushel of wheat from Win Welland valued at 6/- ( as reported in the Exeter Flying Post March 19 1789 )

Ann's sentence was transportation for seven years, the deportation order from the Courts of Exeter (County of Devon) was dated Monday the 16th March 1788.

On 21 July 1789 Ann was transported from Newgate prison to the "Lady Juliana" arriving in Australia on the 3rd June 1790 after a voyage of 309 days. On the voyage Ann became involved with the ship's surgeon Richard Alley, and had a daughter to him named Charlotte Maria, baptised at St.Phillips, Sydney on 5 June 1791. Unfortunately Charlotte died two days later and Richard Alley returned to England.

Ann then became involved with John Irving who was the first Australian emancipist and a noted surgeon (there is a plaque to him on the Nurses walk at the Rocks in Sydney) John died and was buried on the 13th of October 1796, sadly before the birth of his son John Hamilton Irving on 17th January 1796 and baptised at St.Johns, Parramatta on the 17 th of May 1796.

Ann then met and married Robert Flannagan from Ireland who was also a convict, Robert was convicted at Armagh, Ireland, on April 1791, then aged 26, he was transported on the "Boddington" on the 7th of August 1793. Robert Flannagan was often in trouble with the law and finally ran away and was never heard from again .

Ann had two daughters to Robert Flannagan, the first being Susanna, born on the 17th of April 1797, and then Elizabeth, born 7th of April 1798.

Ann then met William Chapman who was also a convict, transported in 1792 on the "Pitt".

Ann and William had six children.

William and Ann ran a tavern named "The King's Head", this has been reconstructed in Old Sydney Town and has actors playing the parts of Ann and William.

Ann also was the first licensed proprietor of passage boats from Parramatta to Sydney ( possibly the forerunner of todays ferries )
