The Cranes - I remember the first time I heard this band. It was night and I couldn't sleep. I put the radio on and "Watersong" was playing. Alison Shaw's voice is haunting and eerie. I was bewildered and during the whole song I was trying to picture the face behind the voice. The next day I hunted down and bought every Cranes cd I could find. Listening to their music made me feel that I had finally found a friend that viewed the world as I did.
I am very happy to have learned about the band early on. Thank Superman for college radio. I saw them live 3 times and took some great pics, audio recordings, and videos. I also met them backstage and got autographs ( except Jim Shaw ).
I remember when they opened for The Cure. The whole stinking audience sat down through their songs. I was the ONLY madman standing on the tippy top of my seat. I had no shoulder next to me to keep my balance. I felt awkward but screw them, I was here to see my favorite band. Then when  the Cure came on, all the "newly dead" got up and started to dance ! I'm talking be-bop dancin here. This was the day heaven and hell was revealed to me. I have photos of this event but I don't view them often, they make me sad.
Although their early stuff ( the first four Ep's and "Wings of Joy" ) remains sacred to me, I have lost touch with the band, the more albums they put out, the more I hear the deadly pop virus creeping in.
This is a still I purchased from the Cranes catalogue. I added pink and blue to the photo, it reminds me of the cd cover from  "Wings of Joy". Click on Alison to go to the Cranes Fan Forum page.
