Round Trip in Scotland
(from 6th to 20th, August, 2002)
I went around Scotland for 2 weeks in August, 2002. It was the year they suffered from heavy rain and flood in Central Europe, especially in Germany, Czech and Austria. In Scotland we had also too much rain. It mostly damaged the railway system there. It was sometimes in my way, but couldn't be a main obstacle. I landed Edinburgh from Japan on 7th via Amsterdam. In Edinburgh I enjoyed Military Tattoo and National Gallery of Scotland. On 9th I moved into Inverness, the capital of Highland District. There I had tours to Cawdor Castle, Culloden and Loch Ness. But I couldn't meet the ghost of Macbeth or them of the massacred highlanders and even Nessie. On 12th I ferried to Isle of Lewis, Outer Hebrides., from Ullapool. I stayed in Stornoway, the administrative center of the isle. In the village of Callanish (Calanais), not far from Stornoway, they preserve the most handsome stone circle in Britain. I had quite a good time there. I came out from the isle on 14th to Island of Skye. I tried a picnic in a small island of Rassay beside Skye. But I was captured by a storm. Fortunately I could go back to Portree, the capital of Skye, and find an accommodation there with a hard effort. I stepped on the Mainisland again through the town of fishery, Mallaig, about noon on 15th. After a night of rest I took a train of West Highland Railways to Fortwilliam at the foot of Ben Nevis, the highest point of the Great Britain. From there I trailed Glen Coe and Loch Lomond towards Glasgow by bus. I arrived at Glasgow on 16th. From Glasgow I visited Robert Owen's utopia, New Lanark. And in Glasgow I appreciated great masterworks in Kelvingrove Art Gallery. I took off Edinburgh Airport on 19th and flew back to Japan on 20th, August.
