Edward The Head (Eddie) appeared first around 1978 as a mask above the drummer's head, who was Doug Sampson at the time. Doug had this mask and thought it funny to have it hanging above his head, with fake blood coming from its mouth. For a long time, it was only referred to as 'Eddie the Head'.

Derek Riggs the well-known artist gave Eddie a body... The first Iron Maiden LP cover featured the first 'real' Eddie. Our freaky friend has been representing the band on album covers ever since, and today he is more than just a 'mascot'. :)

In 1988 Eddie successfully gave birth to a baby on the 'Seventh Son of A Seventh Son' cover. This makes you wonder... did Eddie change his sex???!!! Let's not forget about his appearances on stage, as the approx. 12-feet tall version walks in the middle of the show, dressed in accordance with the album.
