Once again, No Contest for the HardCore 4x4. Headers always rate high on a list of Mods. Besides NOS or gear ratio changes, you will get more Bang for your Buck from headers than any other peice of equipment you could install. And CHEAPER, too! One of the best $100.00 you could ever spend. The Name Brand Companies are usually best. Heddman, Hooker, Blackjack, etc. Often on sale plus they tend to fit and seal off better than the others.(Hint: Try doubling or even tripling up on gaskets to seal those constant leaks!)
And of course, always go with a Dual Pipe setup. As far as mufflers go, keep in mind, nomatter what kind you run, they WILL be burnt out soon enough. Simple fact of 4-wheeling. If you want to keep your truck quiet, be ready to go through many sets. If you like to hear what your truck has to say, go with plain ol' Glass Packs. They are a straight through(low backpressure) design, very cheap, and have a sound that is unmistakable.
Or for the true HardCore 4x4, forget about the mufflers. Just run open headers!(Hint: Be sure to check your nearby wiring first!)
Note: Headers do tend to leak, but are worth the trouble. They also have a habit of eating starters, solenoids, and wires. To help prevent this, rig some form of a heat shield in between. Whether it be metal or fiberglass wrap, anything is better than nothing. Had a friend get his glowing so red hot, that when a branch popped up, it actually went through the Header tube. |
