CARBS
Edelbrock
Only going to deal with plain Carburetors. Fuel Injection systems are not only very expensive but can be very complicated and lots of trouble.
Having a smooth running carb is a neccessity in the mud. There can be no flat spots or lean outs. When punched, it MUST do exactly as it is supposed to without stalling, backfiring, etc. This is why the experienced tend to steer clear of Holley's!
A Holley 850 Double Pumper is one mean Carb, but they are VERY high strung, finely tuned, constantly adjusted, very picky carbs. Fine for that 1/4 mile strip, but after 8 hours of up, down, and sideways movement with 2 hours of that spent under water, they tend to clog and choke easily.
The simple fact of the matter is that you really can't beat a good smooth plain ol' Quadra-Jet! They have withstood the test of time. Probaly more Q-Jets made than all the others put together. They are plentiful, cheap to buy, cheap to rebuild, simple to work on, VERY dependable, and fit many different motor sizes.
On the other hand, Edelbrock has brought back to life another of the greatest carbs ever. The Performer Series. Very reasonably priced, VERY simple working design, very dependable also. And there is just something about a carb that has only ONE vacuum port! The less parts there are, the less there is to screw up!
