NOS. Nitrous Oxide. Some folks depend on it, some just use it, others simply have it, but everybody has at least heard of it! With kits that can ADD many 100's of horses to a motor instantly, who's NOT gonna think twice about that little NOS sticker on the back glass! Without being shown beforehand, you would never know a vehicle had it installed. They are easily hidden. But even as great as NOS is, it really has no place being in the woods. You disagree? OK, let me explain. To start with, Nitrous works by adding a mixture to your gas that raises the octane level unreal amounts. This "new" gas then burns MANY times hotter than normal, which creates the extra engine power. But in the process, the engine itself gets hotter....and hotter.....and hotter....until if you don't let go of the button, your engine simply commits suicide, usually by either sending pieces flying everywhere or by total meltdown. Now, in the woods, heat is a major concern to start with. The cooler you can get your truck to run the better off it is. And with NOS being only a few seconds long, it might be handy for one particular hole, but you can't run it all day long. Not saying NOS is useless, just not suited for most 4x4's. Now if you are a Professional Mud Bogger running an open class, then that's very different. Simple fact, though.... NOS, after repeated uses, does wear out engines quickly.
Personal opinion: Scratch the NOS and get yourself a set of lower gears. |
