Comments: Cpl Joseph E. Funston was causality on Aug 25, 1968 while
serving with the 173 Airborne. Within
the last six months
we have heard from a few fellow soldiers who knew him or were with him when he
died.
It has helped ease the
pain and answered questions that has helped heal our hearts. After speaking to these
men I understand
how difficult it was for them to call us. I thank you for having
a place to post messages or I would have never found out the things I did. We are going do DC for our Daughter's wedding. She is in the
Air
Force and having a
Military wedding. If there is only one other thing I do it will be go to the
Wall. Been there several times. But find it healing to go back. If there is any
one out there who served with Joe and would like to talk to us feel free to

4/68 thru 11/68, 4th Battalion Air Operations Officer from 11/68 thru 2/69, and
4th Batallion Liasson Officer from 2/69 thru 3/69. I would like to

my former platoon NCO's: SFC Davis from Los Angeles, SSG Cook from Tennessee,
SSG "Rock" from Arkansas, & SSG Jose Villegas from South Texas.
Some of my fellow platoon leaders were Lt's Tom McFall, Marty Cook, and Thomas Hill. I recently heard from Tom
McFall and it was great. I have joined Chapter 13 of the 17. Abn Bde Society
here in Texas and have volunteered to serve as Treasurer on for the 2001
National
Convention to be held in Ft Worth, Texas July
4th thru July 8th, 2001, which our Chapter 13 will be hosting. I
hope to be in touch
with my fellow sky soldiers so we can meet again at the convention.

arrived in country with this
Battalion in its
entirety. Our mission was to reinforce the existing 1/503 and 2/503 Inf. The
4th Battalion was formerly the 1/501st. of the 101st Airborne Div., Ft.
Campbell, Ky. This Brigade earned its share of unit and
individual honors, However this one slipped thru the cracks.
The 4th Battalion was awarded a Presidential Unit Citation-Navy for extraordinary heroism an outstanding performances of duty in action against the North Vietnamese Army and the Viet Cong forces from 7 October 1966 to 4 December 1966, This little known operation was called "Task force Healy" Named after its commander LTC Michael D. Healy. The mission was to reinforce the 3rd Marine Division in the Da Nang area. This operation also made History by becoming the 1st US Army ground combat unit to operate in the "I Corps" area of Viet Nam. The task force was under the opcon of the Third Marine Amphibious Force (111 MAF) under the command of General Lewis Walt. This Award presented to the 4/503rd Airborne Inf. (sep) and its attachments. For, the period indicated as confirmed in accordance with paragraph 194,AR 672-5-1. General Order No. 32 Headquarters Department of the Army Washington, D.C. 24 September 1973.
"The president of the United States takes
pleasure in presenting the Presidential Unit Citation (Navy)
To elements of the 173rd Airborne Brigade,
for distinguished service with the 3rd Marine Division (Reinforced).
This award has been
forgotten by time and other circumstances. And all who served in this operation
should be made aware. We served our Country and our commanders proudly. And now
you should be recognized, it is time for all members of this unit to realize
what they have accomplished.
