Irek Mukhamedov & Company
7th September 2000, Sadler's Wells
"This was the first time I had seen Irek performing outside of the Royal Ballet and I was incredibly impressed. I found the programme very original and inspiring. "Class Concert" consisted of the dancers performing a ballet class and it was lovely to watch the exercises which an audience can forget is part of a dancer's daily training. The opportunity for each dancer to show off their best jetes and pirouettes was very entertaining. My favourite part of the evening was "Sita", danced by Irek Mukhamedov and Altynai Asylmuratova to Talvin Singh's "Traveller" and "Butterfly". Both excelled and I was deeply moved by the passion in their dancing and could sense the tension in Sadler's Wells! The performance ended with "Some you Win", a jazz ballet, which was a more light hearted piece, ending a fantastic performance which I shall never forget."

"No twelve minutes could offer more intense pungency - and especially when the Faun is Irek Mukhamedov. He puts blood into the one-dimensional choreography which might have been peeled off an ancient vase. And I have never seen a Faun make the flowing scarf look so much like a woman when he carries 'her', tenderly yet purposely, up the steps to his elevated resting place."

"Tuckett gives the the chief role of John Proctor to Mukhamedov  (the only dancer to be decently dressed and not plastered with grotesque make-up) and because he is a great artist Mukhamedov somehow holds our attention."

"Mukhamedov had gathered together a small troupe of excellent dancers, planned a programme that offered variety and offered new works as well as a few established favourites... and above all, kept the programme short. We left the theatre all Oliver Twists, all wanting more, and I heard several people say 'Oh I could do with that all over again!'... In addition to his other great gifts, Mukhamedov is obviously a born leader."

"Tightly constructed and sparsely designed, the ballet fires on all cylinders, dangerously fast and loose, the sensitive pas de deux from Mara Galeazzi and Irek Mukhamedov creating a welcome change of pace and mood."
