The youngest of three children, Darren was born into a modest home where money was tight but love abounded. His father, a merchant seaman, and his mother, a nurse, did their best to provide a stable home for their family.
At age 11 he realized he loved singing and would often hear pleas from his family to quiet down. Throughout high school at Mabel Park High, Darren tooke very opportunity to act and sing. He graduated and attended college in Brisbane, where he pursued a degree in teaching. While at college he met his future wife, Colby Taylor.
It was because of Colby's urgings that he responded to an advertisement in the newspaper from a band looking for a lead singer. Darren called, met with, and was soon hired by the group Red Edge. The band played bars and clubs but soon broke up, but he and fellow bandmate, Daniel Jones, continued working together.
Eventually after hundreds of demos, the group, which they called Savage Garden, was picked up by a record lable. With their debut album achieving amazing success in Australia, it wasn't long before their first single, "I Want You", caught the attention of several DJs in America. Now an international success, Savage Garden scored their first number one single in America with the ballad "Truly, Madly, Deeply", which Darren had penned for Colby. But as Savage Garden's success grew, Darren and Colby began growing apart. They soon spearated, though the divorce was not finalized until a couple years later.
Though Savage Garden had continued their success through and after this time, they too eventually split. Looking for a temporary change, Darren began renting an apartment in Santa Monica, where he began writing songs for his planned solo album.
Soon after his move he met Crystianne when he visited the coffee shop she works at. They continued talking when he came in and eventually became good friends. In December of that year, after 6 months of friendship, they officially began dating. Though their relationship is rocky at times, they have been dating for a little over a year and a half now.
