Minutes of Meeting on Wednesday 31st May 2000 at BangorPresent: Malcolm Brown (chair), John Reader (minutes), Dr Ian Carter (speaker), Dr Simon Robinson (speaker), Dr John Fazey, Judith Soulsby, K Boaler (Bangor), Phillip Jones, Andrew Smith, , Ian Ball, Simon Parker. Apologies: . Welcome: Dr John Fazey welcomed the group in both Welsh and English. 1st Paper: Ian Carter read his paper "Health Care Spirituality and Change". Summary of Responses: comments ranged from discussion on professional liability to comparison of hospital and hospice care. The debate was felt to depend upon change in methods of knowing and resolving problems. It was felt that the process was like managing any product 2nd Paper: Simon Robinson read his paper on Spirituality and Health Care issues. Summary of Responses: Health care was seen to be very much a "for now" enterprise. We have faith in competence - unlearned by experience - and a faith in care - reinforced by experience. Discussions about the soft furnishings of private health care lead to questions about the ethos of consumerism giving the impression of power - how does this reflect on ethos of science? What about A&E - loosing control to others who have to make the best decisions they can. It was noted that the NHS is not just or even typically hospital care and community experience is quite different. Questions of "best value" and reflexivity of organisation were raised. A balance of competence and care - the necessity of coping with finitude. Future Plans for I.R.I.S.C: The Institute would aim to hold its next meeting in Bangor on 18th September 2000, following this pattern of papers and responses. Speakers 1. Ian Ball & Simon Parker, 2. John Fazey Resolved to build on this website by setting up a mailbase network - John Fazey to inverstigate. The possibility of organising a day long event with a particular focus was raised. Member of the group to be asked for ideas. Need someone to build an event around Thanks: Bangor were thanked for their welcome and hospitality as were Malcolm Brown and John Reader for the smooth running of the meeting and also Simon Robinson and Ian Carter for their papers and contributions to the ensuing discussion.
