Place
Media - Collage
I have recently finished this piece of work on a
personal response to the theme: PLACE. My choice of place was the
Niagara Falls. Our task was to produce a piece of artwork that relates
to that particular place in collage. While exploring with numerous ways
to approach this task, I found that the use of a stencil and a template
could create a beautiful effect, when soft pastels are applied and
rubbed onto the surface underneath.
I tore a stencil our of paper, of a shape representing a maple leaf and
place them randomly onto the black surface which I have chosen. While
smudging the soft pastels from the stencil across the surface, I
accidentally wiped some shavings of the pastels onto the surrounding
surface. In attempt to wipe away the shavings, I made a colourful mark
across the surface. I was astonished by the beautiful effect it made on
my work and I applied more pastel shavings on the surface and wiped them
with my fingers to create more of this newly found effect onto my
artwork. The result was fascinating. It closely represented the flow of
the water.
I had collected numerous flowers and leaves in the past, which have been
dried and I placed them randomly on the surface to see the effect and I
was sure that I had to have them.
And enough explaining and describing, here's what it really looks like.

PaintShop Pro 6.0 and PhotoShop 6.0
This is my favourite piece of art work all year.
It's a computer graphics assignment, where I experimented and played
with different techniques of representing the image. I did many
experimentation pieces. I used PaintShop Pro to manipulate the
images.
Here is what I originally started with. It's a picture from a Dolly
Magazine.
And this is what I have been experimenting:

The final panels of images

(I lost the fourth one...:(...)
I wanted to break away from the restraints I've been subconsciously
setting for myself and really find something that represents a journey I
want to take. I started putting a butterfly on the picture and deleted
the images that were not related. I kept on experimenting with the
butterfly, the colour scheme, and focus of the image. Some parts of the
image is blurred, other parts more in focus. Some parts in black and
white, others in colour. I produced an image where the butterfly looked
like it was moving. I made the butterfly leave a trail by making the
colours fade behind the actual butterfly, showing movement.
I produced 6 images, where the butterfly is in different stages of its
'journey'. The placement of the images was also important. They were
placed in a way that the trail of the butterfly can be clearly
seen.

original series of photographs
This series of
photographs were taken during the filming of the short video. This is
another school project on the theme of "Who am I?" or
Identity. I wanted to portray
this theme as a journey to find who I am, a search for identity. The answer to the potential
question has not yet been found. It is like having the lack of identity.
I see this as journey where I am still trying to find out who I am.
Through this door, the possibilities are endless. The door represents an
opportunity. The mystery remains as to what is on the other side of the
door. So have I discovered who I am?

I really liked the idea of reflection. There
are two sides to every story, like they say, and this is sort of what
this is. Who I am to myself, is different to who I am to others. How
others see me and how I see myself. Very different. This idea of
reflection or two sides, also lead to another question which was what is
on the other side of that door? Is it a path full of opportunities or is
it a dead end? Is this real or am I imagining it all? Is it my destiny
or demise? Do I want to know what is on the other side of that door? Do
you want to know? Everyone wants to know. But sometimes things are
better left unanswered, for fear of disappointment. So this piece asks a
lot of questions. Questions I haven't even thought of asking myself.
When you are asked the question. "Who am I?" or "Who are you?" you
think, "that's an easy question. Of course I know who I am!" But do you
really? Will you ever REALLY know who you are? Your identity? How would
you describe yourself to people? Is it all just on-the-surface stuff?
Because anything deeper, is hard to explain. When I really think about
it, I realize, I don't have everything figured out. My identity is
something I am still gaining throughout my life. We are all given a
place on earth, but we have to fight in order to survive. Our physical
being is what we are, humans, but who we are, that's beyond the physical
being (what you see), it's what you don't see. And what we don't see is
usually hidden deep down inside, that sometimes even we, ourselves don't
see it. And what we don't see, is behind that door. So what is behind
that door? I honestly don't know. But I'm going to find out.

I'm experimenting on a
video. I thought about putting the visual with an Aimee Mann song,
"Ghostworld". I shot some footage that I can use to put in it. When
finished I will put some screen captures up here, because I don't know
how to upload a video on here....check back in a month or so.

Lonely Girl on the Beach

My first oil painting. I had lessons, of course! This took about a month
to complete. I looked on from a picture from a magazine. I gave it to my
dad as a birthday present when I went to HK in the hols. He was very
happy...I am too!!

Mug Prints on my art book

I scanned this from the back of my art book. I was trying to carry my
mug and all these other books, so I put the mug on top of my art book
then accidentally moved it, leaving two very pretty mug rings on my
book. I quickly went to the computer and scanned it while it was still
wet. I think it looks pretty cool.

Dolphins in the Sea
I finished this painting a couple of
weeks ago. I used a very unique technique. A special tool was used to
put into an ink bottle and then I blew into it and ink came out through
the hole, landing freely onto the paper. (If you don't understand I
don't blame you, because I didn't explain it very well...and don't know
how to explain it more clearly...) But anyway...it was really cool. That
was how I got the effect of the water. Then the other coral and fish was
just painted on with acrylic paint. It took me about a month to
complete. I'm quite proud of this one. It looks sooo cool. Check it out.
