The Army Air Force (AAF) had approximately 540 men and women from Iredell County.  They participated in every theater and actions.  From Tate Cruse's rides over the skies of eastern Europe with the Eighth Air Force to the jungles of Burma and the "Hump" to China.  From Captain Thurston McNeely's time as a POW to Helen Morrow Evans participation on D-Day during the invasion at Normandy.

The War and the AAF got close to home on 2 June, 1942.  An Army airplane crash landed at Bradford's Crossroads.  It was picked up later and taken to Charlotte for repairs.
