"Yesterday, December 7, 1941 - a date which will live in infamy..."

So began President Franklin D. Roosevelt's speech to the Congress, the Senate, and to the World about the attack on American forces in Hawaii.  The destruction of so many American ships and lives by another country was unmatched in United States history.

Roosevelt delivered his speech on December 8, 1941 and by the time Germany surrendered in May 1945 and Japan finally surrendered on September 2, 1945, Iredell County had sent over 4400 men and women to fight in a war that would have them known as the "Greatest Generation."

Iredell lost 128 men in the war.  Of these, Jay Edger Alley was first.  He was stationed on board the USS Arizona.  Frank Johnson was a Merchant Marine.  R. C. (Tom) Swann was wounded twice before being killed in action on September 9, 1944.  VFW Post 1072 in Mooresville is named for him.

Craig L. Mundy, 82nd Airborne, and Flake Overcash both paid the ultimate price on the beaches of Normandy.  Joseph W. Cooper survived Pearl Harbor, Attu, and Luzon before being killed on board a Japanese POW ship December 15, 1944.

Jay Edgar Alley - died Sunday December 7, 1941 on board the USS Arizona

They are now our Grandparents and great-Grandparents.  Many have gone on to find the eternal peace.  So how do you remember these men and women who put their lives on hold to save the world?  You never forget them or what they accomplished.  That is what this site is for.  To remember the men and women from Iredell County, North Carolina who served in the military during World War II.
