Since its establishment, the Indo-Qatar Islamic Council has been involved in the development and coordination of the 'Islamic Religious Program', commonly known also as the Islamic Scripture, to ensure that Tamil Speaking Muslims in Qatar are not deprived of an Islamic education. The Islamic Religious Program is at the moment running for one period per week. The program has proved to be very successful and is currently engaging witn several Islamic educators Educating around Two hundred people per week. As it was suggested, it is running effectively and professionally, so the Tamil speaking muslims get benefited round the year. Indo-Qatar Islamic Council is committed to sustain this program particularly as the number of Tamil speaking Muslims increases each year.
The following are some of the strategies and objectives in the area of community development which have been developed and pursued by the Indo-Qatar Islamic Council. � Advocacy and Representation; � Raise media awareness of Islamic cultural and religious sensitivity; � Community consultation; � Development of new Islamic studies; � Provision of better access to housing and accommodation facilities; and � Development of youth, women and recreation programmes.
The following activities and projects have been developed through the employment of a 'Youth Support Worker' by the Indo-Qatar Islamic Council: � Development of policies and structures to address and meet the needs of Muslim young people; � Coordination of the 'Islamic Youth Action Committee'; � Development of recreational activities and programmes; � Development of programmes to empower Muslim young people; and � Counselling and Referral.
� Several 'Fact Sheets' on Islam and Muslim (with regard to Health, Education, Beliefs and Practices etc.) have been published and are available. � Indo Qatar Islamic Council is also active in supporting and assisting non-Muslim organisations, schools and government departments, particularly to develop a better understanding of the Islamic faith. A 'Community Liaison Office' was set up two years ago for this purpose.
� Indo-Qatar Islamic council, through its housing initiative, three years ago, is currently providing subsidised housing and accommodation facilities to Muslim elderly couples. This initiative also include the development of housing projects including crisis and medium term accommodation services for Muslim young men and women; and cheap housing facility for low to medium income earners.
