| Delta Upsilon Chapter History |
| After many years of operating independently in the community, Indiana University and Purdue University joined forces and in 1964 opened the doors to a jointly-shared Fort Wayne campus. Indiana University-Purdue University at Fort Wayne (IPFW) is the home of the Delta Upsilon Chapter. A local sorority, Alpha Psi Omega, was organized in 1966 with seventeen charter members. Alpha Psi Omega was the first local sorority at IPFW to affiliate with a national fraternity. The women of Alpha Psi Omega were known on campus for their leadership in student government, voluntary services to the school, participation in community service projects, high scholastic achievement, and high personal standards. With the enrollment of IPFW rapidly expanding, the members of Alpha Psi Omega desired to affiliate with a national organization. After a good deal of research, Alpha Psi Omega asked for presentations from nine national organizations. The group ultimately chose Delta Gamma - primarily because of its philanthropic work, and its consent to allow some of the rituals of Alpha Psi Omega to remain. On Sunday, October 1, 1972, members of the Alpha Tau Chapter, Butler University, pledged forty members of the Alpha Psi Omega into the Delta Upsilon Colony of Delta Gamma. The installation weekend of May 11-13, 1973, was planned in conjunction with the dedication of the two newest buildings at IPFW. One of these buildings was Kettler Hall, dedicated in honor of Charles H Kettler, husband of Lois Peterson Kettler, Theta, Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana. The festivities began on Friday evening with an inspirational program conducted by members of Gamma Epsilon Chapter from Kent State University and Delta Xi Chapter from Ball State University. The Initiation took place in the youth room at the Trinity Lutheran Church on Saturday, May 12, 1973. Conducted by Gamma Epsilon Chapter, thirty-two collegians, five patronessess, and sixteen alumnae of the local Alpha Psi Omega were initiated into the lifelong membership of Delta Gamma. The summit club was the site of the installation banquet on Saturday evening, May 12, 1973. The theme of the evening was "Spring- A Time for Beginning." The Delta Upsilon Chapter was presented their charter by Eleanor Smith Slaughter, the NPC Delegate. |
