I graduated from Stevens Institute of Technology with an M.S in Technology Management & a B.E. in Mechanical Engineering. A few may have heard about it - very few of you =P. Here are a few little known facts about Stevens.
· John.W.Lieb graduated from Stevens in 1880 and was an early assistant to Thomas Alva Edison. He received a number of patents for electrical devices. While stationed in Italy for Thomas Alva Edison, John.W.Lieb was fascinated by the unearthing of many of Leonardo da Vinci's papers, to the point that he obtained a set of the first copies of Leonardo's works. These copies were donated to Stevens and are now located in the S.C.Williams Library
· Robert.H.Thurston founded and became the first President of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in 1880. The first meeting was held in the Edwin.A.Stevens Building here on campus
· Prince Charles received an Honorary Degree from Stevens in the 70's. He has however never visited the campus.
· Francis James Pond, Professor of Chemistry, solved the problem of the leaking Holland Tunnel (which runs under the Hudson River and connects New Jersey to New York). He told them to dump tons of lime from the surface of the Hudson River to fall on the top of the tunnel to form cement to fill in the cracks.
· Professor Allen Hazeltine developed the revolutionary nutrodyne, thus making the modern radio possible.
· The original Delta Tau Delta house, now demolished, was the first poured concrete residential structure to be made in America.
· The Chi Phi house was the first residential house to be built using steel and it has many similarities to a ship, since a naval engineer designed it.
· The Stevens Theater was the first to use 3-D stereographic sound.
· DMI (Design and Manufacturing Institute) owns one of the world's first stereolithography machines.
· Frederick Winslow Taylor pioneered the concept of scientific management at Stevens.
· Arthur's Landing is named after a Trustee of Stevens Arthur Imperatore.
· Eugene McDermott, the cofounder of Texas Instruments was a Stevens graduate.
· Carnegie Mellon University is named after a Stevens graduate.
· Davidson Labs was one of the first floatation tanks of its kind in the world.
· The Navy parking lot used to be the site of the Navy building, which was constructed around the time of World War II for additional barracks in the New York harbor as well as to house another wave tank for Davidson Labs.
· The Gantt chart often used in Project Management was developed by Henry Gantt, Class of 1884.
