Sorority History
The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated is the oldest Greek-letter organization established by and for Black college women. On January 15, 1908 at Howard University Ethel Hedgeman Lyle's dream became a reality. Joined by eight other innovative students, the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority began to flourish. Five years later, Nellie M. Quander and her gallant group ensured perpetual membership by incorporating the Sorority, creating a never-ending stream of eternally young, enthusiastic Sorors. The efforts of these Alpha Kappa Alpha women in scholarship promotion, vocational guidance, encouragement of foreign study, health services, and the promotion of human and civil rights constitute a priceless part of the Black experience in America.
