Dr. Innis Mary MacDonald Chapter, IODE
Markham, Ontario

Welcome to the website of the Dr. Innis Mary MacDonald Chapter IODE.

Canada flagIODE is a Canadian women's volunteer charitable organization founded in 1900 to encourage public service and patriotism. Today's IODE is a national service organization which promotes projects in the areas of education, social service and citizenship. There are over 300 Chapters in as many towns across Canada. When there are more than eight chapters in an area, a Municipal Chapter is formed to assist in the co-ordination of projects and communication between those chapters. There are also Provincial Chapters in many provinces. The National Chapter of Canada has an office in Toronto, Ontario.

National Chapter of IODE

badge The badge is worn by members to indicate their commitment to IODE. The seven-pointed star on a dark blue background has at its centre the Union Jack, showing our pride that Canada is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations. The surrounding white circle embodying the name of the Organization in gold lettering is securely clasped at the base and symbolizes the unit of purpose of all members. The crown surmounting the Badge represents loyalty to the Queen of Canada. Some members will also have a bar (or several bars) above their badge, designating them as past officers in either their own Chapter or at the Provincial or National levels.

100 years The Mission of the IODE is to improve the quality of life for children, youth and those in need, through educational, social service and citizenship programs.
The goals of IODE have not changed in over 100 years! We are still assisting children and those in need with a variety of different projects. Check out how our Markham Chapter brings the mission of IODE to life in the areas of education, service to our community, and citizenship.

What do the letters "IODE" stand for?
The "Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire" was founded in 1900 (see the History of IODE). Currently, only the letters "IODE" are used.

The Vision of IODE is to improve the physical and emotional health and expand the educational opportunities of all Canadians within a unified country.

Nationally, IODE members across the country raised over $3,000,000 and reinvested it in Canada's children, families, and communities. More than a million hours of volunteer service are given each year to local activities. In 2006, our Chapter raised and allocated $3,000 for programs meeting our mandate. Perhaps you will recognize some of the organizations we assisted!

Would you like to make a donation? IODE is a registered Canadian charity and as such can issue tax receipts for donations. The donation may be made in memory of a special person, living or deceased.

Our Chapter is named after a remarkable (but unrecognized) woman doctor who practiced in Markham. Who was Dr. Innis Mary MacDonald? Read about her in the History of our Chapter.

There are Chapters in many cities and towns across Canada.
Is there one in your hometown? Would you like to start a Chapter? Contact us and we'll be happy to assist you in starting your very own Chapter (with as few as 10 friends/members you can make a difference in your community!)
