May 1st - 5th | Thursday night to Monday
Golden Week 4 Day Cycle Tour
** 1/2
Explore the beautiful hills on Shikoku Island, including Shikoku's 2nd largest peak 'Tsurugi san' by bicycle. Suitable for all intermediate and advanced cyclists.

Route and accommodation will be finalised early April and early reservations will be necessary for the ferry booking.

Nara to Kasagi Onsen Hike

The man of a thousand hikes, Paul Sinclair, is brewing up something for this weekend.  It will start at JR Nara and cover about 23km, 6.5 hours walking time; arriving  at Kasagi Onsen at 4pm.

Tsurugi-san Hiking in Shikoku

Are you going to stay in Japan for Golden Week? Then, please join the "Tsurugi-san hiking in Shikoku.

Time:  Kobe 10:00 - Sightsee AwajiIsland and Koutsunosato
Costs: Lodging: JPY12000- Includes Dinner and Breakfast. Transportation: about JPY5000- AwajiBrige and Seto Brige are expensive.
Bring: Strong mountain boots, Rain gear and lunch.
Lodging: We will be staying at "LAFORET TURUGI-SAN" for 1 night and 2 days.
Notes: We will return on the morning of May 5th.  Sign up early, there is only space for 5 participants

There's no better way to meet people than to travel alone.  Michelle Katz will share her experiences on a recent solo trip to Papua New Guinea.

May 11th | Sunday
Mt. Hiei Day Hike in Kyoto
*
Enjoy the spring beauty of Mt. Hiei and the surrounding plains, and the spiritual aura of Enryaku temple (the main hall is a United Nations World Heritage Site) at the top. It is a 2 hour hike to the top of Mt. Hiei and Enryaku temple. We will spend some time exploring the temple complex and then people will have the choice of hiking or taking the cable car down into Kyoto.

Meet: JR Hieizan Sakamoto Station at 10:00am.
Directions: Transportation details: Take the JR Kosei line (trains bound for the west side of Lake Biwa). Don't confuse these with the more frequent JR Tokaido line trains which go to the east side of Lake Biwa. There is an express train (Shinkaisoku) that leave Kobe's Sannomiya at 8:54am and arrives at Hieizan Sakamoto at 9:59. This train will stop at various stations along the way (Ashiya, Osaka, Takatsuki, Kyoto to name a few), so please check the time for the station nearest you.
Bring: Lunch and sturdy footwear.
Costs: The fare from Sannomiya is 1,280 yen one way.
Note:  From Enryaku temple you will have the choice of hiking or taking the cable car down into Kyoto. Either way, we should be down in Kyoto mid afternoon. This hike will be canceled if there is more than a 20% chance of rain that morning. Please check the weather forecast.

Full Moon Cycling in South Kyoto
*
Let's  ride along the Kizu river under the light  of the full moon. 
Easy, level riding.

May 17th | Saturday
Sanda Area Bike Ride
** 1/2
A warm up ride for the following Sat.  The ride is about a 80-100km max loop from Sanda to Sasayama. We will start from Sanda past beautiful Aono reservoir and head towards Moschi pass and cycle down to Sasayama and back to Sanda via Togyo dam area.  The view of the surrounding hills are just beautiful on a nice day.

Bring: lunch and necessary cycle needs.  Slick tires for Mtb or road bike are important

May 18th | Sunday
3 Prefecture Cycle Circuit Around Kamo
** 1/2
Starting from Kamo we climb into the mountains North of the Kizu river heading East, with spectacular views of the peaks of Nara and Mie. We drop back into the valley at Shimagahara, then climb again to Otogi pass (590m). We then descend into the back country heading West, finally climbing Mt. Jyuubu (607m) with views of Biwako to the North and the mountain ranges to the South before returning to Kamo.

Cost: Train 950 yen one-way
Bring: Helmet, lunch, bike & repair kit
Notes: Total distance is about 80km, all on road. It is possible to catch a train back from Shimagahara after 35km or so for those who don't want to do the entire circuit.

May 24th | Saturday
Cycle to the Japan Sea Coast
*** 1/2
A century ride with little traffic from Sanda to Japan Sea Coast.  We will first head to Route 173 via Shitsukawa. From route 173 we head to Miwa cho and on to Fukuchiyama.  From Fukuchiyama we can have rest, snacks or lunch and from there cycle along Yura river to Japan Sea.  The final destination is Kanegamisaki beach.  We can take an onsen if you wish and hop on the train from Tango Kanzaki stn. back towards Osaka/Kobe area via JR Fukuchiyama or those with a strong heart can cycle back along Yura river to Fukuchiyama and take the Jr train from there too.
