PAGE 7: FAVORITES

AN INTRODUCTION TO THE WORLD WIDE WEB

It pays to keep up with improved versions of your browser, particularly because they are free of charge in the first place and it costs nothing but your time to upgrade. Newer browsers contain better, more up-to-date features, and some of the older browsers will not be able to read some web pages. It becomes a bit like driving around central Auckland in a Morris Minor - you'll still get there, but not without frustration.

You can tell what version of Internet Explorer you are using by clicking on HELP in your Menu Bar, then selecting ABOUT INTERNET EXPLORER. If you are not using Version 5.00, then you should consider upgrading. Version 5.00 is available FREE from Microsoft by CLICKING HERE.

If you are running an older version of Explorer, there are some features explained in this tutorial that you will not be able to utilise.

Included in your ToolBar is a FAVORITES button.

Favorites is the term used to refer to the web pages you wish to visit regularly, and these are able to be located quickly by accessing them from your Favorites file.

The quickest (though not necessarily the best) way to "bookmark" a file is to use a keyboard shortcut. Holding down your Ctrl key, press D and the page will be automatically saved within your Favorites file.

When you arrive at a web site that you wish to return to again later, or on a regular basis, you should bookmark that page. The recommended way to do this is to find the home page, or index page, of the site you are intending to bookmark.

To bookmark the Cyberguide Internet Tuition site, CLICK HERE to go to the index page, then press Ctrl D to create the bookmark in Internet Explorer Favorites, then hit your BACK BROWSER to return to this page.

Another way to bookmark a page is to click on FAVORITES in your Menu Bar (where it reads File, Edit, View Favorites...), and then select ADD TO FAVORITES. Or, you can right-click with your mouse to bring up a menu. In that menu, select ADD TO FAVORITES.

When you add a page to your Favorites File (v5.0), you will be prompted as to which bookmark directory you wish to place the page reference in (this does not occur with keyboard shortcut bookmarking). By selecting CREATE IN..., you can specify the most appropriate favorites directory - for example, a page on your favorite Rock Band would obviously go into the MUSIC directory. If no appropriate directory exists on the topic, then create one by selecting NEW FOLDER. You can also give the page a name that best describes it - many web pages are unnamed, or simply marked "index".

Click on FAVORITES in the List Bar again.
In the panel that comes up you will notice that there are directories relating to different topics.
By running your cursor over the bookmarks list you will be able to open these folders into subdirectories or individual page references.
Clicking on one of these references will take you to the chosen page. For instance, you may wish to visit a horoscopes page on a daily basis - selecting the page's bookmark will take you back there every time.
You can return from there to the previously selected page by using your BACK button.

Bookmark maintenance is essential if you want to find a specific page among hundreds. Clicking once again on FAVORITES in the Menu Bar will allow you to select ORGANISE FAVORITES, from where you can sort your favorites into their respective directories.

You can, if you wish, elect to have your Favorites file on display, in a frame beside the currently selected web page, in your browser. To do this, click on the FAVORITES button in your Tool Bar. You can scroll down through the directories using the scroll bar, and you can close Favorites again by clicking the small cross in the top right-hand corner of the frame.

CLICK HERE to go to the next page.

If the ADDRESS BAR is not shown in your browser, you will need to perform the following task:

Click on VIEW, then select TOOLBARS, and make sure that "Address Toolbar" has a tick beside it.
If not, click on ADDRESS TOOLBAR and a tick should appear. So too will your Address Toolbar.
