Dachau
The first Nazi concentration camp, near Munich, opened in March 1933, shortly after Hitler was appointed Chancellor.  German records show 200,000 prisoners were held at Dachau, and that at least 30,000 died, primarily from starvation, disease, and executions.  The camp was liberated by American troops in 1945, and exists today as a memorial to those who suffered and died here.

Guard towers, electrified fences, and even a moat, were used by the Nazis to prevent prisoners from escaping Dachau.
