Alternate reality, alternate timeline,
divergent future, alternate future, Earth 616, all of these terms are for
the same thing. Another timeline or Earth. To explain this (which, by the
way, it's not an easy task) I will use the term alternate reality from now
on. There are millions of millions of milions of alternate realities. All of them are on top of each other, but on different wavelenghts, like different radio stations. The differences between two alternate reality can be minimal, a person chooses to become a villain instead of a hero, someone is killed before he had to die, minimal differences, or gigantic differences. An alternate reality is born at a point where two paths can be taken. That's why there are so many of them. All of these alternate realities form the Multiverse, which is ruled by Roma. Merlyn had decided to name the realities with numbers, to keep track of them. They decided that the main Earth (the one in the comics you read every month) will be numbered 616. The X-Men movie, Mutant X, the Age of Apocalypse, Ultimate X-Men, The Evolution X-Men, all of this are examples of alternate realities. In the movie, the tv series or even Ultimate X-Men they don't say "this is an alternate reality" but since the story is quite different from that of the book it is an alternate reality, different choices mean alternate realities. Alternate futures is just the same, only that the different events happened in the future, instead of the past. Time-Travel. Since different choices mean alternate realities, you cannot change the future by going to the past. If you change an event, prevent a death, kill someone important, you will only create an (say it with me) alternate reality. Unless you have the Forever Crystal, a crystal that can erase timelines (or alternate realities). Another Dimensions. Mojoworld, The Negative Zone, Sub-Atomica, Polemachus, these are alternate dimensions, not alternate realities. They exist at the same level that our world and they are unique. There isn't an Mojoworld 542 or 874. There's only one Mojoworld or one Negative Zone. That's how the heroes returned from the Heroes Reborn alternate reality, through the Negative Zone.
