Benefits of Being Greek...

Scholarship...
Your education is the primary reason you came to the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.  It is also a primary concern of the Greek community here at SDSM&T.  The Greek community at SDSM&T strives for the best in college education.  Chapters assist members in acheiving their full academic potential by providing programs such as study skills, test taking strategies, and time management.  As new members get started on their majors, older Greek members will always be there for tutoring and guidence.

Leadership Development...
Fraternities and sororities provide leadership opportunities aimed at developing new skills, increasing self-confidence, and enhancing educational experience.  Within the fraternitites and sororities are opportunities to hold leadership positions as officers and committee chairs.  The Greek community has more than 100 leadership positions.  Members are also encouraged to accept leadership postions in other organizations throughout campus.  In fact, many leadership postions on campus are held by Greeks.

Friendship...
Fraternities and sororities enable men and women to establish strong friendships, often lasting beyond collegiate years.  Affiliation provides members the opportunity to interact with students of all ages.  Membership also offers students an additional support network during their acclimation to college life.

Risk Management...
Greeks at SDSM&T recognize the responsibility to educate chapter members on issues of social concern.  Alcohol and drug awareness, date rape, campus violence, HIV/AIDS, and other sexually transmitted diseases are just some of the timely issues being addressed through educational seminars and workshops.

Community Service...
Service to the community reflects the true essence of the Greek community and is another important aspect of Greek involvement at SDSM&T.  Greeks donate time and energy by planning, organizing, and participating in events that benefit both local and national charities includeing: Adopt-A-Highway, Habitat for Humanity, March of Dimes, the Ronald McDonald House, and United Blood Services.  Thus, fraternities and sororities encourage dedication and commitment to others through service activities.  Members of our chapters also donate many hours tutoring, participating in community clean-ups and fundraisers, serving as Big Brothers/Big Sisters to underprivileged kids, working in the classrooms of local elementary schools, and so much more!  Through fundraisers, Greek students help those in need, meet new people, make new friends, and have fun together.

Social Life...
Greek organizations offer many opportunities to meet people and releive stress through social events.  Fraternities and sororities get together for mixers, formals, and other casual events.  Fraternities and sororities provide a supportive group of brothers and sisters who have become lifelong friends.

Teamwork Development...
Intramural sports provide friendly competion between Greeks and other SDSM&T students.  There are a wide variety of sports to choose from, such as flag football, volleyball, softball, water polo, soccer, basketball, and many more.  Participating in intramural activities and working on teams and committees within the chapter teaches the importance of working on a team and in groups toward a common goal.
