INTENTIONAL LIVING HOME PAGE
BOOK LIST
"We are so surrounded by a reconstructed world that it is difficult to grasp how astonishingly different it is from the world of only one hundred years ago, and that it bears virtually no resemblance to the world in which human beings lived for four million years before that.  That this might afect the way we think, including our understanding of how our lives are connected to any nonhuman system, is rarely considered."
                                                 -Jerry Mander, "
Four Arguments for the Elimination of Television"
"Consumerism traps us as we become habituated to the good life, emulate our neighbors, or just get caught up in the social pressures created by everyone else's choices.  Work-and-spend has become a mutually reinforcing and powerful syndrome--a seamless web we somehow keep choosing, without even meaning to."
                                                 -Juliet Schor, "
The Overworked American"
"There must be more to life than having everything."
                                                -Mauice Sendak, "
Higglety Pigglety Pop!"
Which means more to you:
Your soul or your fame?
What you are or what you own?
What you can be or what you have?

Remember:
The wise one does not worry about fame;
The wise one does not worry about possesions.
The wise one concerns oneself with life
And sees what he can become.
                                              -Lao Tzu, "
The Tao Te Ching"
Voluntary simplicity; simple living; downshifting; intentional living: all terms used to describe a movement of people exploring ways to live a more fulfilling, meaningful life in a society geared toward materialism, money, and status.  This page is intended to reflect the diversity of the movement, as voluntary simplicity will mean different things to different people.  We use the term "intentional living" to emphasize the importance of personal choice  as well as to account for the fact that many areas of interest that can be classified under voluntary simplicity are anything but simple!  While for some, intentional living may involve nothing more than cleaning the clutter out of the attic, for others it may involve building one's own house from the ground up, attic and all!  One person's simplicity is another person's arduous hell.  But the common thread running through each individual piece of the movement is a desire to choose one's direction in life, to intentionally build one's life based on one's own values rather than the values of society.  Intentional living is the way to a deeper, more fulfilling life!
