Jack: "We still have to expect them to use her son's condition to cultivate sympathy for the defendant."
Nora: "Then you use it to cultivate sympathy for her son. Is taking the life of a person with disabilities any less of a crime than taking the life of a person without them?"
Jack: "The fact is, she went to this emergency room doctor that week, she was confronted by the hopelessness of her son's condition and she reacted."
Nora: "Is that a legal opinion or an emotional response?"
"Well, what do you think [is a suitable punishment]? Marshall of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade?"
"Let's hope he has a good immune system."
Jack: "Are you suggesting that we offer him a deal?"
Nora: "After what we went through to get him back? Not on your life!"
Nora: "I see we have more than one ego in that courtroom with a penchant for winning."
Jack: "Guilty as charged."
Nora: "Now let's hear the jury say that."
Nora: "What should be the standard to take the life of a teenager?"
Abbie: "Where I come from, it's when what a person's done is so vicious, so cruel, he forfeits the right to get any older."
Nora: "Where I come from, a person can't forfeit that right. We can only take it from him."
"With any luck, we'll be able to strap him to a gurney before he's 21."
"I said make a deal. I didn't say pony up the courthouse."
Jack: "I have to admit, it was nice to get somebody out of jail for a change."
Nora: "Well, I hope that's out of your system."
"There are worse places than prison."
"The public looks to us to maintain law and order, not run around like chickens with our heads cut off."
"Why do you always believe in the worst in people, Jack?"
"I like to think I can do this job without becoming a cynic."
Karlin: "I try to enforce the law. You try to compromise it."
Lewin: "It's called prosecutorial discretion."
"It'll make a great sound bite someday."
"Until someone else is sitting in this chair, I'll continue to do what I think is right."
"Other than egg on my face, what do I have left?"
"They're all politicians...just some of them wear robes."
"They can always ask Benton to help them apply for a pardon."
