Why is Turkey known as the “Sick Old man of Europe”?

Turkey (once the Ottoman Empire) was engaged in a series of wars with Russia in the 19th century. Finally, the empire fell apart in 1922 and a number of small states such as Serbia, Bulgaria and Albania emerged with the present-day Republic of Turkey. The prolonged wars made it appear like a terminally ill old man.

 

Why do we dream?

In the 1890s, Sigmund Freud suggested that dreams are fulfilment of wishes. It is believed that a person’s hidden feelings often surface in dreams. So psychologists analyze their patients’ dreams in an effort to help them to understand themselves.

* 1.2 kg was the per capital consumption of poultry meat in India last year. It was less than 500 gms in 1900. The southern states were the largest consumers in 2002 at 520 million kgs. The northern states consumed 325 million kgs while the eastern states consumed 255 million kgs. Western India consumed the least at 175 million kgs.

* 2,50,000 shells and rockets rained down on Tiger Hill during the conflict. Such high rates of fire over long periods had been witnessed since World War II. Indian troops strength in the region reached 7,30,000. Up to 60 additional posts have been set up to fill the gaps through which the intrusions took place.

* 1,50,000 crore was the estimated cost of the government in fighting the Kargil War. This includes new military equipment bought at Rs 500 crore and compensation, etc.
