Honour for Indian Photographer

Soma Malik, a photographer from Kolkata, became the first Indian to win a $2000 first prize in the 2002-03 Commonwealth Photographic Awards Competition.

 

Lakshya Successfully test-flown

The country�s defence aircraft development programme got a boost when the indigenous Pilotless Target Aircraft (PTA) "Lakshya" was successfully test flown on 23rd March 2002 with a new engine from the interim test range at Chandipur-on-sea. Lakshya, which is a sub-sonic re-usable aerial target system remotely piloted from the ground is designed to impart training to both Airborne and Air-defence pilots from weapon engagements. The IAF has still recently been using the US-made Chakor PTA system. The aircraft has even caught the attention of Israel which has evinced keen interest in buying it.

Indira Gandhi Peace Prize

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Mary Robinson received the Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace for Disarmament and Development for 2002. She got this award for opposing racism and highlighting cultural diversity.

 

New World Record in Women�s Weightlifting

Nataliya Skaun (Ukraine) set a new world record in clean-and-jerk, lifting 135 kg at the European (women�s) weightlifting Championship in Antalya (Turkey) on April 26, 2002.
